Sioux Falls Canaries News Release

EL PASO, Texas. - A five-run rally in the second inning allowed the El Paso Diablos to surge ahead of the Sioux Falls Canaries on Saturday night, leading to the Birds' 8-3 loss at Cohen Stadium. El Paso took a 2-1 lead in the four-game series.

Back-to-back hits by Nick Van Stratten and Stephen King made for a promising start for the Canaries in the first inning. They both scored on RBIs by John Alonso and Tim Pahuta for a quick 2-0 lead.

But El Paso unloaded against Sioux Falls starter Austin Brough (0-4) in the second inning. The Diablos cracked six hits, including three doubles, and sent nine men to the plate. Miguel Chacoa drove in the go-ahead run with a one-out single down the left field line.

King doubled home a run in the fifth inning, but the Canaries came no closer while El Paso added a run in the bottom of the fifth and two more in the seventh. King was 3-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI to lead the Canaries offense.

Brough suffered his third loss in as many starts, yielding six runs on nine hits while walking one and striking out five.

El Paso starter Luis Chirinos (2-3) picked up a win, holding the Canaries to three runs across 5 2/3 innings. He walked one and struck out four. Relievers Marshall Schuler and Chandler Barnard combined to shut out the Canaries the rest of the way.

Oscar Mesa was a standout for the Diablos with a double, triple and two RBI.

The Canaries lineup had several opportunities, but stranded nine runners and capitalized on only one of seven leadoff men to reach base.

The finale of the four-game series against the El Paso Diablos is at 7:05 p.m. CDT on Saturday, June 23, in El Paso. The game will be broadcast on Sioux Falls Sports Radio 1230-AM, 98.1-FM KWSN and kwsn.com.
