Memphis Xplorers News Release

WALLS, Miss.—Xplorers offensive line/defensive lineman Nigel Tharpe visited Walls Public Library on Wednesday along with two Xplorers cheerleaders, where he read to an intimate audience of two, former St. Jude patient Tyler Warren, 8, and his brother Alec, 7.

Tharpe read "Stand Tall, Molly Lou Melon," and then gave the boys the opportunity to try on the Xplorers gear. Alec didn't hesitate. Tharpe helped him into the big shoulder pads, pants with shin and thigh pads, and helmet. He took off his own jersey and slipped it on over Alec's head.

"It's really important for athletes to get involved in the community, considering that the profession permits us to display our talents on the field, but that's just skimming the surface of what we have to offer in other areas of life," Tharpe said following the appearance.

"By going out and helping the community, those intangible talents come out, and we are able share what we know with the community. We are able to teach lessons and help others."

Tyler showed the Xplorers staff his Hickman Line. This is a tube inserted in the chest where doctors can insert syringes, preventing the patient from suffering pain from an overwhelming amount of needle injections. His mother said he had the line for more than a year and a half during his treatment at St. Jude. Alec informed the staff that his favorite sport was soccer.

"It was really cool to meet Alec and Tyler," Tharpe said. "That was my first opportunity to do public service with the Xplorers, and we had a great time."
