Louisville Fire number one in week 11 poll
June 9, 2004 - arenafootball2 (af2) News Release
CHICAGO - For the seventh straight week a different team is atop the af2 Coaches' Poll as the Louisville Fire earned the No. 1 ranking for Week 11, the league office announced today. The Fire, who sit in the No. 1 spot for the first time this season, are the sixth team in af2 to reach No. 1 this year.
The Fire received 261 points, including 12 first-place votes, to edge the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Pioneers by four points. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton garnered 257 points with five first-place votes to land in the No. 2 spot. Coming in third this week was the Birmingham Steeldogs with 231 points and three first-place votes. Other teams receiving first-place votes include the No. 4 Oklahoma City Yard Dawgz (one vote), the No. 5 Quad City Steamwheelers (one vote), the No. 6 Florida Firecats (two votes) and the unranked San Diego Riptide (one vote).
Team posting gains in this week's poll aside from the Fire and Pioneers jumping from a third place tie to No. 1 and No. 2 respectively include the Yard Dawgz moving from fifth to fourth. The Tennessee Valley Vipers moved into seventh from eighth. The Cape Fear Wildcats gained one spot, going from ninth to eighth. The Tulsa Talons improved from 11th to ninth and the Bakersfield Blitz went from 12th to 11th.
The Week 11 schedule shows two games between Top 12 teams. The No. 4 Yard Dawgz travel to Wichita to face the No. 10 Stealth on Saturday night at 8:00 p.m. ET. Also on Saturday, the No. 2 Pioneers tee it up against the No. 5 Steamwheelers at 8:30 p.m. ET.
Each week during the season af2 coaches vote for the Top 12 teams in the league by ranking them one through 12 on a ballot. Teams ranked first receive 12 points with the point value decreasing by one for each place below first, meaning a team ranked 12th receives one point. Total points determine the Top 12 list. In the event of a tie in total points, the team with the greater number of first-place votes is ranked higher. The af2 Coaches' Poll is announced every Wednesday during the regular season. Coaches are not allowed to vote for their own team and the poll results have no bearing on postseason qualification.
