Memphis Xplorers News Release

Southaven, MS-The Memphis Xplorers of the af2 have been assigned former Northern Illinois kicker Steven Azar by the league office. Azar was a member of the All-MAC conference team during all four years with the Huskies, becoming the first in school history to accomplish such a feat.

Azar, (5'8'' 192) is the first kicker assignment for the Xplorers in this 2005 off-season. During his collegiate kicking days, Azar put up numerous school records and was heralded as one of the great place-kickers in all of the NCAA. He holds the NIU record for points (370), single-game PATs (10), career field goals (73), and consecutive field goals (14).

"Steven Azar has proven himself to be a great college kicker," stated Xplorers Head Coach Danton Barto. "Kicking is more difficult in this league because of the narrower goal posts, and we believe that Steven has the precision and accuracy to be among the best in this league. His collegiate stats are very impressive, and he came through in the clutch for Northern Illinois in a bunch of games."

In 2002 Azar kicked a 45-yard field goal against Wake Forest with only four seconds on the clock to force the game into overtime, in an eventual 42-41 victory for the Huskies. In 2003 Northern Illinois defeated Maryland in their season opener, a game in which Azar hit a 52-yarder. Azar kicked five of the six longest field goals in Northern Illinois school history.

Xplorers Director of Player Personnel Chris Bauer added his thoughts, "Steven Azar coming onboard should solidify our Special Teams. He is a battle-tested kicker who has made his share of big time kicks. If we are going to win the ArenaCup we will need big performances along the way from our kicking game."

Azar finished his collegiate career as the ninth all-time scorer in NCAA Division 1-A history.

The Xplorers were ten game winners in their 2004 playoff season. For group and season ticket information call 662-393-3761. Memphis Xplorers Arena Football! Back in Black!
