Central Valley Coyotes News Release
FRESNO â The Central Valley Coyotes of the arenafootball2 league have been assigned offensive/defensive lineman Joe Schey, head coach Fred Biletnikoff Jr. announced today.
"This is an unbelievable addition to our team," Biletnikoff Jr. said. "Joe approached me wanting an opportunity to play and I welcomed him with open arms knowing what he had accomplished at Fresno State. The Central Valley has tons of talent and we really want this team to have local guys that the community can support."
Schey (6-6, 305 pounds) was released by the New England Patriots in August of 2003 after a senior season where he was named an All-WAC first-team selection at offensive lineman.
The three-year starter was an All-WAC honorable mention selection as a junior (2001) while starting in all 14 game and not allowing a sack the entire season. At right tackle, Schey was a major reason the Bulldog offense was among the best in the nation, becoming the first team in NCAA history to possess a 4,000-yard passer, two 1,000-yard receivers and one 1,000-yard rusher. During his junior and senior seasons he only gave up one sack in almost 1,500 pass attempts.
In 2000, Schey played in 12 games while becoming the mainstay at left tackle, protecting quarterback David Carr's blind side. He started the final nine games at left tackle and earned Verizon Co-SIDA All-District and WAC Scholar-Athlete honors.
In his freshman year, the lineman redshirted and was selected Dick Duncan Offensive Scout Team Award winner. The following year, Schey started the first three games at left tackle before suffering a broken foot in practice that sidelined him for the season.
Born on March 17, 1980 Schey was an All-CIF selection at Diamond Bar (Calif.) High. He currently works as a substitute teacher and part-time coach for Clovis Unified School District.
Schey becomes the fifth former Bulldog to be added to Central Valley's roster joining WR/DB George Benson, FB/LB JaJuan Huddleston, WR/DB Latario Rachal and OL/DL Tamarcus Tyson, who he played on the same line with for two seasons at Fresno State (2001-02).
The Coyotes will kick off their 2005 af2 season with an exhibition game at Selland Arena on March 27. The regular season starts on the road in Bakersfield on April 2. Fifty dollar deposits for 2005 Coyote season tickets, which include all nine games played at Selland Arena, are now being accepted at 559-263-9780.
