LEADING OFF: West Virginia dropped a 2-1 final at Greensboro on Tuesday night. The Hoppers scored a run in the first on a walk, a steal and a Josh Naylor single. The Power evened the game in the top of the fourth with a bases loaded sac fly by Ryan Nagle. In the home half of the inning, Bret Helton hit Justin Twine, who scored from first on a double by Aaron Blanton. That was enough offense for Chuck Weaver and the Greensboro bullpen. Weaver held the Power two hits over six innings for the win. Jeff Kinley pitched two scoreless and CJ Robinson worked the ninth for his 15th save of the year. Helton took the loss despite a career-high seven strikeouts.
BETTER RECOGNIZE: Mitchell Tolman was honored by the South Atlantic League on Tuesday as the Player-of-the-Week for June 27 through July 3. The second baseman hit .500 during the week, pacing the Power to a 5-2 record. Tolman had nine hits over 18 at bats, including four home runs and six runs batted in. He also walked seven times and scored six runs. Tolman and Mitch Keller are the only West Virginia players to win a weekly award this season.
WORKING LATE: Despite lasting only two hours and 17 minutes, Tuesday's game didn't finish until after 10:00 P.M. A 44 minute delay due to inclement weather held the first pitch until 7:44 P.M. It is just the second Power game this season to have a delayed start.
TO THE SHOW: Brooks Pounders was recalled by the Kansas City Royals on Tuesday and made his Major League debut last night. Pounders was originally drafted in the second round in 2009 by Pittsburgh and was traded to the Royals after the 2011 season along with Diego Goris for Yamaico Navarro. Pounders pitched for West Virginia in 2011 prior to the trade, going 5-5 in 36 appearances with a 3.68 ERA. He is the 52nd former Power player to see action in the Majors and third this season after Alen Hanson and Jameson Taillon.
WILD AND WONDERFUL: Yunior Montero was promoted to the Power roster on Sunday afternoon and made his South Atlantic League debut last night. The right-hander is a native of the Dominican Republic and has not pitched above short season ball during his career, which began in 2011. Montero went 2-1 for the Black Bears this season with a 2.25 ERA over eight innings, tallying one save. He worked two scoreless inning last night.
PEACE OUT: West Virginia closes its series in Greensboro today. The Power and Grasshoppers have split their previous six meeting this season, though Greensboro has won both match-ups in the current set. West Virginia opened 2016 on the field at NewBridge Bank Park and took three out of four. The Power lead the all-time series 86-76 since 2005 and went 11-6 against Greensboro last season.
WALKED OFF: The Power are now 7-3 this season in games decided in the last at bat. West Virginia has had seven different players drive in the game-winning run in a last at bat, including Carlos Munoz on Saturday night's come-from-behind win over Columbia. West Virginia's three walk-off losses have come on a wild pitch (4/24 at Lexington), a single (5/14 at Lakewood) and now a home run.
POWER POINTS: Former Power catcher Eric Fryer was claimed by the Pirates off waivers on Sunday from the St. Louis Cardinals. Fryer was drafted by Milwaukee in 2007 and played for the Power in 2008... West Virginia is now 9-11 during day games this season... Gage Hinsz has not faced Greensboro this season. In fact, Hinsz has not even faced an opponent from the Northern Division.
AROUND THE ORGANIZATION: Pittsburgh won its sixth straight, beating St. Louis 5-2. Eric Fryer went 2-4 with three runs batted in against his old team... Indianapolis scored five in the first en route to a 6-0 win over Louisville. Willy Garcia went 1-3 and drove in three... Altoona lost 10-0 at Akron... Bradenton pounded Charlotte 11-5. Kevin Kramer drove in three to back Yeudy Garcia... The Black Bears dropped both halves of a doubleheader at Aberdeen.
