THE LEAD OFF: West Virginia earned their first walk-off win of the 2014 season on Friday with a 9-8 victory over the Rome Braves. The Braves raced out to an 8-2 advantage in the sixth behind three-run innings in both the third and sixth. West Virginia chipped away at the lead with two in the seventh behind a Jeff Roy two-run blast and then in the ninth a two-run home run off the bat of JaCoby Jones would tie the game at eight. West Viirginia would load the bases following the home run when Danny Collins walked in Reese McGuire for the win. Zack Von Rosenberg earned the win and Matt Kimbrel was charged with the loss.
NUMBER ONE WITH A BULLET: JaCoby Jones home run on Firday was his 16th of the season, placing the shortstop in a tie for seventh most in a single West Virginia Power season. Three players have hit sixteen in a season: Alen Hanson, Jose Osuna and Gregory Polanco in 2012. Only two players have hit 20 or more home runs in any season single Charleston-based teams joined the SAL in 1987 (Stephen Chapman (24) and Jason Parsons (20)).
ITS BEEN A WHILE: This series will mark the first time since 2010 that the Rome Braves have paid a visit to Appalachian Power Park. The last time Rome was in Charleston was a four-game set from August 30 to September 2 in 2010 that saw the Power take three of four from the Braves. West Virginia took the only series between the two in 2014 2-1 and the Power hold the all-time series lead at 17-15. At Appalachian Power Park, West Virginia is 9-4 all-time against the Braves.
CAN WE START IN THE SECOND?: Dovydas Neverauskas has had trouble getting through the first inning in 2014. Neverauaskas has a 9.50 ERA in 18 first innings tossed and has allowed 19 earned runs on 34 hits. The hurler has allowed two home runs in the first this season and has struck out 12 while walking 11.
SOUTHERN HOSPITALITY: The West Virginia Power will play just their 12th game against a Southern division opponent at Appalachian Power Park tonight. The last time the Power hosted a cross-divisional showdown was from May 7 to May 9 when West Virginia was swept by Savannah. At home against the Southern division, the Power are 4-7 and 11-17 overall as opposed to 8-26 at home against the Northern division and 23-46 overall. 10 of the Power's 24 home games remaining are against Southern division opponents.
PLUNKED: West Virginia Power piching has plunked 66 batters this season, the most of any team in the South Atlantic League. The Power hit 100 batters in 2013.
BORDEN HONORED: Right-hander Buddy Borden was named as the South Atlantic League's Pitcher-of-the-Week for his efforts from July 7 through 13. The starter went 2-0 with a spotless 0.00 ERA over two starts spanning 11 and two-thirds innings. It is the second straight week that a Power player has been honored by the league.
PROMO UPDATE- JULY 19: The Power battle the Rome Braves on Saturday, August 2 at Appalachian Power Park for Football Night. BirdZerk will perform during the game and the first 1,000 fans through the gates will receive a six-pack sling.
POWER POINTS: West Virginia has 23 home games and 20 on the road remaining on the schedule this season. West Virginia will appear at Appalachian Power Park 19 times in August, where they are now 11-33 in 2014... Cody Dickson is now 3-0 with a 1.88 earned run average during the second half of the 2014 season.
