Matz: Allowed 6 H over 5.0 shutout innings with 5 K and 1 BB in 4/19 Win @ LWD (7-2 Gnats)
THE LEAD OFF: West Virginia shutout Charleston 7-0 on Thursday night. The Power plated six runs in a nine batter second inning, including two on a triple by Dilson Herrera. Max Moroff added a solo home run in the third to back Joely Rodriguez. The Power starter pitched five and third scoreless innings before Ryan Hafner and Kyle Haynes finished the game off, allowing just one hit over the remainder of the game. Wyatt Mathisen had three hits, Walker Gourley and Eric Wood added two apiece, and the Power avoided getting swept by the RiverDogs.
ON-BASE MOROFF-TEN THAN NOT: Max Moroff walked in the eight inning Wednesday and now has a 17 game on-base streak. Only four players in the league have had longer streaks than the Power shortstop (one at 20 games, two at 19 including an active streak for Kannapolis's Adam Heisler, and one at 18). Moroff has 15 hits and 16 walks during his last 17 games and has an on-base percentage of .378 during this stretch. Moroff was last held off the bases on Opening Day (April 4 against Asheville).
TIME TO SWAT: West Virginia opens a four game series in Savannah tonight. The Power lead the all-time series 20-14 after splitting with the Sand Gnats at two wins apiece last summer. West Virginia has a winning record at Grayson Stadium, having gone 8-7 there since 2005. These teams face of in ten games this season, including six times during the second half.
ROAD WARRIORS: West Virginia's win on Thursday was their sixth on the road during the opening month of the 2013 season. The 2012 edition of the Power won seven road games during the entire first half.
REINFORCING THE PEN: Pittsburgh promoted Thomas Harlan to the Power roster for Thursday's game. Harlan went 2-6 for State College last summer after getting selected in the 13th round from Fresno State during the 2012 draft. The southpaw had 33 strikeouts and 11 walks during 34 and two-thirds innings pitched for the Spikes. David Jagoditsh was transferred to the Jamestown roster in a counter-move. Jagoditsh was 0-3 with an ERA of 11.88 after seven appearances for West Virginia. Harlan did not appear in the series finale at Charleston.
GROSSMAN TO MLB: Former South Atlantic League All-Star Robbie Grossman made his Major League debut in Wednesday in Houston's 10-3 win over Seattle. The centerfielder went 2-5 with two doubles, including a ground-rule double of Joe Saunders for his first Major League hit. Grossman was traded to Houston as part of last summer's Wandy Rodriguez deal and is the 30th player to have worn a Power jersey and make it to the Majors.
SCHWIND TO WV: The Pirates promoted Jonathan Schwind back to the West Virginia roster on Wednesday. The outfielder/ catcher was on the club's Opening Day roster and appeared in three games, batting .300 with a run batted in, before being transferred to the Jamestown roster in the New York-Penn League on April 12. To make room for Schwind, Pittsburgh transferred pitcher Lance Breedlove to the Jammers roster.
PROMO UPDATE- MAY 18: The Power will host their annual WVU night on May 18 against Lexington. The first 1,000 fans through the gate will receive a Geno Smith bobblehead. All fans will have the chance to meet and greet Kevin Jones, Truck Bryant, and Da'Sean Butler. WVU Night is present by the WV Army National Guard.
POWER POINTS: West Virginia is 2-2 in daytime games this season and have lost both of their pre-noon starts... West Virginia has not won a game this season when scoring fewer than six runs. The Power are now 0-9 when scoring five or less in any games this season.
AROUND THE ORGANIZATION: Pittsburgh edge Philadelphia 6-4 and took three out of four in the series. The Pirates battle St. Louis on the road tonight... Indianapolis beat Lehigh Valley 5-1. Francisco Liriano pitched five inning in a rehab start for the win... Altoona was idle on Thursday... Bradenton beat St. Lucie 9-1 Alen Hanson and Gregory Polanco drove in six of the nine runs for the Marauders.
