Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
WALK-OFF WEDNESDAY: Evan Chambers doubled in Jesus Brito in the bottom of the ninth as the Power walked-off with a 3-2 win over Delmarva on Wednesday night. The Shorebirds took a 1-0 lead against Kyle McPherson in the first, but the Power tied the game in the second on a sac fly by Ramon Cabrera. Delmarva took the lead again in the fourth, and West Virginia knotted the game at two with a Bengie Gonzalez single RBI single in the seventh. Zack Foster earned the win after tossing a scoreless top of the ninth and benefitting from Chambers' hit in the home half of the inning.
POWER K-MAN: Kyle McPherson set a new single-game high with ten strikeouts over five innings on Wednesday night against Delmarva. McPherson struck out three in the first, two in the second, one in the third, three in the fourth, and one in the fifth. The right-hander surpassing his own team-high of nine strikeouts in a game, set on May 7 against Kannapolis in a 2-0 West Virginia win.
POWER VS CLAWS HISTORY: The Power are 26-33 since 2005 against the BlueClaws, including a 4-8 mark in 2009 during West Virginia's first year of affiliation with Pittsburgh. The Power are 10-14 at FirstEnergy Park since 2005, and are 16-19 at home. During the â09 season, West Virginia went 1-3 during games played in New Jersey.
THREE STRAIGHT THEN STOPPED: Tuesday's game one win was the third consecutive victory by the Power and gave them their longest winning streak of the season. The streak was snapped three hours later when the second game of the doubleheader concluded. The Power had lost their five previous attempts to win a third consecutive game by finals of 3-2, 6-3, 5-0, 9-3, and 4-0 final scores.
SIX AND DONE: Evan Chambers and David Rubinstein saw their hitting streaks extended and snapped on Tuesday. Each player went 1-4 in game one of the doubleheader to extend their streaks to six straight games. Both players went hitless during the nightcap and saw those same streaks come to an end. Both streaks began on May 12, with Chambers batting .393 (11-28) during his six -game run and Rubinstein batting .435 (10-23) during his streak.
STROKIN': Rogelio Noris has hit a team-high five home runs this season, and four of those have come at Appalachian Power Park. Noris, who homered on Sunday, hit home runs in three straight home games from May 6 though 8 against Greensboro and Kannapolis, respectively. Noris' only other home run was on April 25 in a 10-6 game one win at Kannapolis.
POWER POINTS: West Virginia is 14-0 when scoring five or more runs in a game this year and 4-21 when scoring four or less, including Wednesday walk-off 3-2 win over Delmarva... Power pitchers have walked 99 batters this season, the fewest surrendered in the SAL this season... Evan Chambers leads the SAL with 31 walks, three more than Delmarva's Brian Conley. Chambers is tied for sixth in walks across all of the minor leagues.
AROUND THE ORGANIZATION: Pittsburgh rallied to edge Milwaukee 6-4... Indianapolis scored five late runs but still lost 7-5 to Scranton/ Wilkes-Barre... Altoona dropped a 3-1 final to Akron... Bradenton lost 2-1 at Dunedin.
