CHARLESTON, SC - Juan Lagares' two-run single in the eighth inning broke a 2-2 tie, as the Savannah Sand Gnats beat the Charleston RiverDogs, 5-2, in front of 4,839 fans in South Atlantic League action at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park Thursday night.
Savannah ends its losing streak at four and climbs to 25-16, while Charleston's losing skid continues, as the club drops their seventh straight contest, falling to 17-24. This marks the longest losing streak for the club since May 2006, when the team lost nine straight games.
With two on and two out in the eighth, Savannah's Wilmer Flores hit a chopper to Charleston shortstop Kelvin Castro that was bobbled and then thrown wide to first to load the bases. Lagares then stepped in and grounded a two-RBI single under the glove of the diving third baseman Rob Lyerly for a 4-2 lead.
Rafael Fernandez led off the ninth with a solo home run to right field against Ronny Marte (1-1) increasing the margin to 5-2.
Sand Gnats reliever Taylor Whitenton (2-1) picked up the victory allowing just one run over 4.0 innings while walking none and fanning seven.
Savannah took a 2-0 lead against RiverDogs' starter Shaeffer Hall on a two-out RBI double by Alonzo Harris and a RBI triple from Pedro Zapata.
Charleston cut the lead to 2-1 in the fifth via RBI double from J.R. Murphy off of Savannah starter Darin Gorski, who took a no-decision in his 5.0 innings, permitting a run on eight hits with three strikeouts.
Murphy came calling again in the seventh with a line drive RBI single to left tying the score at 2-2.
Hall also absorbed a no-decision humming 7.0 innings of two-run ball while surrendering just four base hits with no walks and six punchouts.
Murphy, Jimmy Paredes and Luke Murton all had two hits for the RiverDogs, as eight of the nine starters had at least one hit.
Game two of this series is scheduled for a 7:05 p.m. first pitch on Friday night. Charleston sends right-hander Sean Black (2-3, 6.32 ERA) to the mound, while Savannah counters with right-hander Armando Rodriguez (2-3, 2.55 ERA).
