Homers by Kyle Jensen and Chad Cregar helped Greensboro build an early lead, and the Grasshoppers defeated the Lexington Legends 7-4 Thursday night in Greensboro. The Legends stranded 16 baserunners in the game.

Jensen hit a two-run homer in the second inning, and Cregor added a solo shot in the third to put Greensboro in front 3-0. They added another in the fourth on an RBI single by former Lexington Christian Academy and University of Kentucky star Chris Wade, who had two hits in the game.

The Legends, who left five runners on in the first two innings, got on the board in the fifth. Jose Altuve walked to lead off the inning, and Jiovanni Mier singled. Both advanced on a wild pitch. Jake Goebbert hit a line drive to right field, where Rand Smith made a diving catch. Altuve scored from third after the catch, but Mier was thrown out trying to advance to third. J.D. Martinez followed with a double, and Kody Hinze singled, scoring Martinez and cutting the Greensboro lead to 4-2. Hinze leads the South Atlantic League with 44 RBI.

Smith's two-run single in the bottom of the sixth gave Greensboro a four-run margin again, and each team added a run in the seventh.

The Legends threatened in the last two innings, but left the bases loaded in the eighth and two on in the ninth, when they scored once.

Ramon Benjamin (1-0) got the win. He relieved starter Matt Montgomery in the fourth inning when Montgomery was struck on his pitching hand by a line drive hit by Brian Kemp. Lexington starter Jose Cisnero (2-2) was the losing pitcher.

The teams meet again Friday night at 7 p.m. in Greensboro.
