New York Red Bulls News Release

HARRISON, NJ "" MLS Golden Boot leader and All-Star Bradley Wright-Phillips scored his 17th goal of the season and sixth in his last five games, but the New York Red Bulls were forced to settle for a 1-1 tie against the San Jose Earthquakes at Red Bull Arena in front of a crowd of 20,001 spectators Saturday evening. New York is now on 24 points with a 5-6-9 record.

Wright-Phillips recorded his league-leading 17th goal of the season in the 33rd minute from the penalty spot to open the scoring on Saturday night. After San Jose forward Steven Lenhart was called for a hand ball in the box, Wright-Phillips stepped up and converted with a right-footed shot to the left of goalkeeper Jon Busch.

New York goalkeeper Luis Robles made a key save in the 41st minute to keep the Red Bulls ahead, 1-0. Lenhart got on the end of a set piece and put a header on frame, forcing Robles to extend fully to his left and push the ball away. New York took a 1-0 lead into the halftime break.

The Red Bulls nearly extended their lead in the 57th minute when Wright-Phillips played Eric Alexander into the 18-yard-box. Alexander took Wright-Phillips' pass but pulled his right-footed shot just wide.

Robles came up big again for the Red Bulls in the 81st minute. Earthquakes' forward Chris Wondolowski found himself with space on the top of the 18-yard-box with the ball on his foot. Wondolowski turned and fired a left-footed shot that took a deflection, but Robles was able to dive to his left and make the save.

The Earthquakes would break through with five minutes to play. Lenhart collected a pass just outside the six-yard-box and hit one on the half-volley past Robles to tie the game at 1-1.

New York nearly scored a last-gasp winner late with Lloyd Sam coming close, but after a slaloming run into the box, his on target attempt was blocked away.

Next up for the Red Bulls is a friendly against the 2014 FA Cup Winners Arsenal FC of the English Premier League at Red Bull Arena on Saturday, July 26 at 5:00 PM (TV: ESPN2). The Red Bulls return to MLS regular season action on July 30 with a trip to Rio Tinto Stadium to take on Real Salt Lake at 9:00 PM (TV: ESPN2).
