Seattle Sounders FC News Release
SEATTLE, WASH. - Seattle Sounders FC defender Chad Marshall and midfielder Osvaldo Alonso have been named 2014 MLS All-Stars. Sounders FC has a league-high five players on the All-Star roster as Clint Dempsey, Obafemi Martins and DeAndre Yedlin were named to the Fan XI. The five selections also mark the most in club history.
The MLS All-Stars will compete against Bayern Munich on August 6 at Providence Park in Portland, Oregon. Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m. PT on ESPN2, UniMas, TSN and RDS.
Alonso earned his fourth straight All-Star selection after being honored in 2011, 2012 and 2013. Alonso ranks second among field players on Sounders FC with 1,522 minutes played this season, starting 17 of the team's 18 matches. He has been named the team MVP four consecutive years (2010-13) and is the club's all-time leader in games played (156), starts (152) and minutes (13,361).
Marshall was named to the All-Star team for the third time in his career after he was selected in 2009 and 2010. In his first season with Sounders FC, Marshall leads all field players with 1,530 minutes played. He has scored one game-winning goal and has added two assists in 17 appearances.
Major League Soccer Commissioner Don Garber named Portland Timbers' midfielder Diego Valeri and Chivas USA forward Erick Torres as 2014 AT&T MLS All-Stars.
Because of the competitive format -- MLS vs. the World -- of the AT&T MLS All-Star Game, MLS asked All-Star head coach Caleb Porter to choose from among all available players, and he constructed a dynamic, balanced roster loaded with the League's top talent to take on one of the best teams in the world.
Porter selected all 11 members of the original fan-voted All-Stars. Michael Bradley (Toronto FC), Jermain Defoe (Toronto FC), Bill Hamid (D.C. United), Martins (Seattle Sounders FC), and Bradley Wright-Phillips (New York Red Bulls) received their first MLS All-Star selections. Ten of the 19 MLS teams are represented on the roster.
