Connecticut Whale News Release
Worcester, MA, March 15, 2009: Tom Cavanagh and Riley Armstrong had a goal and an assist apiece, and Thomas Greiss made 21 saves, to lead the Worcester Sharks to a 4-1 victory over the Hartford Wolf Pack Sunday at the DCU Center.
The loss dropped the Wolf Pack (37-25-3-3, 80 points) into second place in the Atlantic Division, two points behind the Providence Bruins, who beat Lowell 6-2 in Providence. Sunday's defeat was only the Wolf Pack's second regulation loss in the last 13 games (10-2-1-0).
After a scoreless first period, the two teams would combine for four goals in the second period, three of them by the Sharks.
The Wolf Pack struck first, on a power play at the 2:07 mark. Patrick Rissmiller, a product of nearby Holy Cross, put the puck into an empty Worcester net, after it had slid behind Greiss without Greiss realizing it.
Worcester answered that, though, with a pair of goals in a span of 2:16. At 6:14 a shot from the right point by Brett Westgarth deflected off the stick of Michael Sauer right to Armstrong, who backhanded it in. Then, at 8:30 on a Worcester power play, Cavanagh scored his 15th of the season. A shot was blocked right to Sharks leading scorer Ryan Vesce in front of the net, and Vesce dished to Cavanagh at the right-wing side of the crease for the finish.
Lukas Kaspar made it 3-1 for the Sharks at 14:42 on another Worcester power-play, beating Wolf Pack goaltender Miika Wiikman from a sharp angle off left wing.
T.J. Fox completed the scoring at 9:52 of the third period, on a shot from the left circle that went in off the post to Wiikman's left.
Wiikman made 25 saves in the Wolf Pack net, in his fourth straight start.
