Iowa Chops News Release

Friday night's comeback may have ended in a heartbreaking loss, but Saturday's game ended with a great victory, after rallying with four goals in the third period, as the Chops kept their playoff hopes alive by defeating the Quad City Flames, 6-4.

The 1st period was an extension of Friday night's game for the Iowa Chops as penalties killed the Chops the entire period. The Flames outshot the Chops 18-3 in the period and scored two power play goals. The first was off the stick of John Vigilante who beat JP Levasseur over the catching glove. The second, a rebound goal by Carsen Germyn.

The 2nd period was much better for the Chops, but it didn't start well. The Flames made it 3-0 off an even-strength goal again from Vigilante, who's wrist shot eluded Levasseur. However, the never-say-die Chops came back a minute later as a 2 on 1 pass from Eric Boguniecki to Chad Painchaud netted the Chops first goal of the game and Painchaud's second of the season. The Chops finally got some power plays in the period and after a breakaway save by Levasseur on JD Watt, the Chops made the Flames pay on the power play with another nice pass from Boguniecki to Drew Miller in front. Miller redirected the pass underneath the crossbar to bring the Chops to within 3-2 at the end of two periods.

The third period saw the Flames go up by two goals early on, after David Van Der Gulik notched his sixteenth goal of the season with just under 16 minutes to go in regulation. The Chops didn't go quietly, as T.J. Trevelyan sparked the Chops on with a great goal to put the Chops within one with just over 11 minutes left in regulation. The comeback was fully on for the Chops in the third, as they registered four goals, including the game-tying tally by Petteri Wirtanen and the game-winning tally by Ajay Baines with just three minutes left in the period. The Chops got an empty-netter from Francis Wathier as the Chops scored 6 out of the last 7 goals of the game.

The Chops will return to Des Moines for Tuesday night's game against the Hamilton Bulldogs. This will be the only time the Bulldogs will visit the Chops this season.
