Manitoba Moose News Release

The Manitoba Moose extended their losing streak to two games by suffering a 3-1 loss to the Toronto Marlies on Sunday afternoon. The Moose now hold a 1-2-0-0 record on their current six-game road trip that will continue in Hamilton on Wednesday night. Michael Grabner scored the only goal for Manitoba while Curtis Sanford stopped 20 shots for his second regulation lost this season.

Goaltenders Curtis Sanford and Justin Pogge manned opposite ends of the ice as the Moose and Marlies got underway at the Ricoh Coliseum.

Manitoba received the opening powerplay when Alex Foster was penalized for holding at 8:59. Even though the visitors didn't capitalize on the man-advantage, they were able to claim the shot lead, 5-4.

Defenseman Nolan Baumgartner faced a hit from Foster, who was on the way out of the penalty box, and Guillaume Desbiens interjected. After a short dispute, both Foster and Desbiens were handed five-minute fighting majors, with an additional two-minute instigating call for Desbiens.

With 11 seconds left in the first period, Curtis Sanford made the initial save on Foster's shot, but Ryan Hamilton slapped the rebound through the backdoor for a 1-0 lead.

A 1:04 into the second period Michael Grabner escaped on a breakaway and shot the puck over Pogge's stick to even the score at one.

Midway through the game, Toronto regained their lead. Speeding towards Sanford, Stefano Giliati wired the puck into the net for a 2-1 tally.

The Moose earned their fourth powerplay at 13:11 when Ryan Hamilton was put away for tripping. Still leading in shots, 13-11, the Moose couldn't translate their shot lead into a goal lead before play resumed to five-on-five.

With Daniel Rahimi serving time for tripping in the early half of the third period, the Marlies extended their lead even further. From inside the face-off circle Jeremy Williams snapped a one-timer behind Sanford for a 3-1 lead.

Back-and-fourth play consumed the remainder of the game, but neither team could net another goal and the Marlies beat the first-place Moose 3-1.
