Down East Wood Ducks News Release
The Woodies started off hot on both sides of the ball in game 4 of the 6-game set of games versus the Fredericksburg Nationals. Gavin Collyer took the mound for the Woodies and shoved through the first few innings, striking out the side in the first and third innings. The offense was on fire with four runs in the first and two in the second, taking a commanding 6-0 lead. Daniel Mateo led off the game with a single and added to his stolen bases by swiping second, before scoring on a two out RBI double by Yosy Galan. Liam Hicks also unleashed a three-run home run over the right field wall. In the second Mateo turned his night into a multi-hit night with a triple. Cauley reached first on a walk and both him and Mateo moved up on a sac fly by Galan for another RBI.
After the six-run outburst the Nationals started to slowly claw back putting up one run in the third, two in the fifth, two in the seventh, and took the lead in the eighth 8-6. This was propelled by number three Nationals prospect James Wood, who came over in the trade for Juan Soto to the Padres. Wood showed off some oppo power by belting a two-run homer in the fifth and collected four hits in six at bats with three RBI's. His teammate J.T. Arruda also collected three RBI's in the game for the Nationals. The play from these two pushed the game into extras where the Nationals took the lead in the tenth 9-8, but the Woodies loaded the bases to tie the game with a Abi Ortiz RBI groundout, and with two outs and Zion Bannister up to the plate in a 3-2 count, hit a single up the middle into center to score Hicks from third won the game for the Woodies in walkoff fashion 10-9. Mateo, Hicks, and Bannister were instrumental in the win with seven hits between them and six RBI's.
