
Nine-Run Lead Evaporates as Pelicans Lose 14-13 to Hillcats

In a stunning ninth inning, the Myrtle Beach Pelicans saw a large lead disappear as they fell 14-13 to the Lynchburg Hillcats. Their second loss of the week dropped the Birds to a 66-34 record and 19-15 in the second half. Lynchburg improved to 48-52 and 13-21 in the second half. The stadium was filled with dinosaurs for Dino Night presented by Ed's Dinosaurs Live.
The Pelicans racked up 18 hits and were led by Ezequiel Pagan (4-6, HR, RBI) with a solo home run and three singles. Josue Huma (2-6, 2 RBI), Felix Stevens (3-6, 3B, 2 RBI), and Ethan Hearn (3-4, 2B, 2 RBI) all brought home multiple runs in the defeat. The Birds left 10 runners on base and went 4-for-16 with runners in scoring position.
By giving up the go-ahead run in the ninth, Johzan Oquendo (2-1) took the loss in one inning of work. Starter Didier Vargas lasted four innings with four unearned runs off four hits and two walks while striking out three. As a team, the Pelicans walked 11 batters and struck out 12.
Lynchburg turned 13 hits into 14 runs with Junior Sanquintin (4-6, 2B, RBI) knocking four base hits to lead the team. Cesar Idrogo (2-4, HR, 4 RBI, 2 BB) hit a two-run homer and brought in two more runs to pace the Hillcats in RBI. Yordys Valdes (2-6, 3 RBI) brought in three runs from the leadoff spot. The big hit was a two-run double by Joe Donovan (1-4, 2B, 2 RBI, 2 BB) in the top of the ninth to take the lead.
Elvis Jerez (2-2) earned the win with 1 2/3 shutout innings out of the bullpen with just one hit allowed. Zach Pettway came out to close the game and threw a scoreless ninth to pick up his first save of the season. Starter Ryan Webb lasted just shy of two innings with eight runs, three earned allowed off six hits and three walks.
For the sixth time in seven games, the Pelicans opened the game with a run in their half of the first. Pagan hit a two-out single and Stevens tripled on a ball that got by Idrogo in right field to put the Birds in front 1-0.
Myrtle Beach unloaded for an eight-run second to pull away early. With the bases loaded. Huma hit an infield single to third base to bring in a run and leave them loaded. Mora drew an RBI walk and another run scored on a wild pitch to extend the lead to 4-0. With runners on second and third, Stevens grounded out to short to score Huma. Jacob Wetzel followed with an RBI single. Webb came out of the game for Tomas Reyes, who gave up a walk and a three-run single to Ethan Hearn as the Pelicans led 9-0 after two innings.
The Hillcats started their scoring in the top of the fourth with four runs. Lexer Saduy grounded to third with two runners on and reached on a throwing error by James Triantos at third. Two runs came in and Saduy advanced to third on another throwing error by Stevens at first. Idrogo followed with his two-run homer to left-center field for his first of the season to cut the Pelicans' lead to 9-4.
With two outs in the bottom half, the Pelicans plated two more. Huma hit a slow roller to first base for an infield single that scored the runners from second and third and extended the lead to 11-4.
Three runs by the Hillcats in the top of the sixth brought it closer. Juan Benjamin drew a walk with the bases loaded to score a run and Valdes hit a two-run single to right field that decreased the deficit to four.
Triantos led off the bottom of the sixth with a triple to the gap in right-center field. The following two batters struck out and Triantos scored on a wild pitch by Samuel Vasquez to make it 12-7 Pelicans.
Pagan launched his home run in the bottom of the seventh to right field off the Pelicans' clubhouse. The solo shot was his 10th of the season and made it a six-run game.
With Angel Hernandez on the mound in the top of the ninth, the Hillcats started their comeback. Hernandez walked the first two batters and gave up a two-run single to Idrogo to right field to make it 13-9. After a single to Benjamin, Valdes singled to left to bring another run in. Dayan Frias was hit by a pitch and Hernandez came out for Oquendo. After striking out the first batter for the first out, Richard Paz tapped a ball right in front of the plate that was fielded by Hearn for an RBI groundout. Sanquintin followed with an RBI single to put runners on the corners in a one-run game. On a 2-1 count, Donovan flew a ball to deep center field that hit off Pagan's glove and fell to the wall as two runs scored on a double. Lynchburg took a 14-13 lead on the play.
Pettway retired the Pelicans in order to end the game.
The Pelicans will look to get back on track with game five of the series against the Hillcats on Saturday night at 6:05 p.m.
