Madison Mallards News Release

The Madison Mallards traveled to Wausau, Wisconsin for their first away game of 2021 and came away with a 5-3 loss in a tight game. The Woodchucks won the game on a walk-off two-run home run from Brandon Trammell.

It was a back-and-forth game with the Mallards jumping out to a 2-0 lead. Bryant Shellenbarger (Akron) hit an RBI single in the 5th inning to put the Mallards up.

The Mallards then gave up that lead shortly after as the Woodchucks scored two in the bottom of the fifth and one in the sixth.

3-2 was the score heading into the top of the 8th when the Mallards tied it up on a sacrifice fly from Sam Vomhof (UW-Whitewater) making his first start for Madison.

In the ninth, Mallards reliever Kyle Subers (Lafayette) came on for his third innings of work out of the pen and gave up a walk prior to the walk-off home run. Subers pitched 2.2 innings with four walks and three strikeouts as those two runs on the home run were all he gave up.

Ernie Day (Iowa Western) started on the mound for the Mallards in his season debut. He pitched 4.1 innings giving up 5 hits and two earned runs. He also had five strikeouts and five walks.

The Woodchucks starting pitcher Bobby Vath had a quality start pitching six innings giving up two runs, with only one being an earned run. He had six strikeouts and zero walks.

The winning pitcher for the Woodchucks was Chandler Poell who pitched a scoreless and hitless top of the ninth with a strikeout.

Kyle Bork made his first start for the Mallards and was the best hitter in the Ducks' lineup. He had three hits, a walk and an RBI on the night, with the RBI coming on a double deep in the gap in the second inning.

JT Benson (Louisville), Cam Cratic (Missouri State) and Jacob Cambell (Illinois) each also had multiple hits on the night. Cambell made his first start for the Mallards behind the plate.

Next up for the Mallards is another matchup with the Woodchucks in Wausau. They will conclude the two-game series on Thursday at 6:35 p.m. before the Mallards head back home to play Wisconsin Rapids.
