Wausau Woodchucks News Release
WAUSAU - The Wisconsin Woodchucks would come back to tie the Eau Claire Express in the bottom of the ninth inning but would be defeated in ten innings as they lose their sixth straight game 5-3.
A solo home run from Express' right fielder Tim Zier in the top of first inning would give the Express an early 1-0 lead.
The Woodchucks would even things up in the fourth inning as Matt Tellor would single to right field scoring Joey Rodriguez on the play. Rodriguez would lead off the inning with a double down the right field line.
Things would remain tied until the Express would come up to bat in the top of the eighth inning. Mike Porcaro would score on a two out throwing error from Woodchucks' shortstop Madison Carter. Porcaro would reach earlier in the inning from a Carter throwing error as well. Daniel Kihle would come in to score in the next at-bat as Greg Harisis would hit a blooper into right field giving the Express a 3-1 lead.
The Woodchucks would try to rally in the bottom of the eighth as Madison Carter would lead off the inning with a home run that hit the top of the left field wall and bounce over leaving the Woodchucks trailing 3-2. The Woodchucks had the tieing run at third base when Tyler Stieb would pop out to the third baseman. Kirby Taylor would try to score on the play after Harisis would fall over after he caught the ball but a nice play by Harisis to get up and throw out Taylor at home to help the Express hang onto a 3-2 lead.
The Woodchucks would rally in there last at-bats to force the game into extra innings as Matt Tellor would reach base safely after hitting a double into the right center field gap. Tellor would advance to third on a sacrifice bunt from Woodchucks' right fielder Austin Diemer. Tellor would then come into score after Carlos Chavez would throw a wild pitch to even the game up at three.
The Express would answer in the top of the tenth inning when they loaded the bases and Zier would come into score after a ground ball would deflect off Woodchucks' pitcher Jackson Lowery's glove giving the Express a 4-3 lead. They would get an insurance run when Parker Zimmerman would draw a bases loaded walk to allow Chane Lynch to come into score giving the Express a 5-3 advantage which would be the difference for the night.
The win for the Express would be awarded to Carlos Chavez after he would blow the save as he would throw one and a third innings after giving up the tying run. The save would be awarded to Lance Thonvold as he would come in the bottom of the tenth with the tying run on first base and stuck out both Stieb and Matt Tellor to finish the game.
The loss for the Woodchucks would be given to Austin Orewiler as he would surrender the two go-ahead runs in the top of the tenth inning.
The Woodchucks will travel to Wisconsin Rapids for the resumption of their June 15 game that was postponed due to rain as the first part of a double header tomorrow night. The second game will only be a seven inning game after the conclusion of the first game. First pitch is scheduled for 4:35.
