Alexandria Blue Anchors News Release
Rochester, MN - The Alexandria Blue Anchors fell to the Rochester Honkers by a score of 12-2 Monday afternoon at Mayo Field. After the loss, the Blue Anchors now have a record of 4-14 in the first half.
Alexandria was able to grab an early lead in the top of the second. Austin Listi was hit by a pitch on an 0-2 offering from Honkers starter Derrick Hadley. With Tim Cusick up, a wild pitch put Listi at second and he advanced to third on a Cusick single. Ryan Blanchard flew out to shallow center for the first out but Aaron Gretz was able to bring home the game's first run with a sacrifice fly to center giving the Anchors a 1-0 advantage.
The lead didn't last long as Rochester responded in the bottom half of the second off starter Cameron Mingo. Michael Pomeroy drew a one-out walk and scored on a Jeff Campbell triple that banged off the centerfield wall. Reid Roper followed with a walk and Kevin Barker brought home Campbell with a single to center, giving Rochester the 2-1 lead.
The Honkers added to their lead in the bottom of the third when Carter Burgess hit a solo homer to make it a 3-1 Rochester lead.
Kris Goodman added excitement to the game in the top of the fifth for the Blue Anchors. The first two batters were retired and Goodman hit a two-out single. Andrew Sohn hit a single to put Goodman at third. With Hadley pitching from the wind-up, Goodman took off in an attempt to steal home and slid in safely to score the Anchors second run and cut the Honkers lead in half at 3-2.
Rochester wasted little time getting the run, and more, back. Jared Watts started the bottom of the fifth with a base hit to right and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Kalei Hanawahine. Tyler Baker singled to left field to plate Watts before Alex Greer blasted a home run to left scoring Baker and increasing Rochester's lead to 6-2.
It wasn't until the bottom of the eighth when the scoring continued. Ross Slaney entered in the eighth for reliever Andy Johnson. He walked the all four batters he faced leading to one run. Taylor SImpson came in to face Watts and he retired him on a sacrifice fly to center to make the score 8-2. An error off the bat of Hanawahine loaded the bases and Burgess doubled to left scoring Roper and Barker. Baker collected his second single of the day which scored Hanawahine. Greer singled to left scoring Burgess and that gave the final score of 12-2.
Mingo (1-2) took the loss going five innings and allowing six runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out three. In two innings of relief, Johnson allowed no runs on one hit and two walks to go along with four punch-outs. Slaney was lifted before retiring a batter allowing four runs, three earned, on four base-on-balls. Simpson finished the afternoon with one inning pitched, giving up two runs on three hits.
Minnesota Baseball Academy Player of the Game - Kris Goodman (CF) - Goodman saw his batting average climb to an even .300 Monday after going 3-5 with a run scored. The Hawkeye outfielder now has three games in which he has had three hits. He leads the team in runs scored with 16.
