Wausau Woodchucks News Release
Wausau, WIS - A battle for first place in the South Division saw the Wisconsin Woodchucks fall to the Lakeshore Chinooks 5-2, thanks to superb pitching by the Chinooks.
Two consecutive singles from the Chinooks (17-8) in the top half of the second inning put the Woodchucks (15-8) into an early jam. A ground out to second base by Ryan Larson plated Connor McKay. A double to the right-center field gap would bring in Zack Bowers to give the Chinooks an insurance run. The Chinooks tacked on one more run on a throwing error from Paul DeJong to give them an early 3-0 lead.
The Woodchucks responded with an answer in the bottom of the second inning as Brendon Hayden led off the inning with a home run to right field to cut the lead to two. CJ Chatham hit a double down the right field line to bring home Jake Scudder on the play cutting the deficit to 3-2. However, that would be all that the Woodchucks could bring across the plate in the game.
The Chinooks extended their lead back to three when Sawyer Polen came into score on an infield single by Ryan Krill with the bases loaded. Chatham had an errant throw to second base that allowed Jake Noll to score giving the Chinooks a 5-2 lead.
Chinooks' starting pitcher Shaun Anderson held the Woodchucks' offense in check for most of the night. He pitched seven innings surrendering the two earned runs in the second inning walking just one batter while striking out five. Connor Jones came into the game in the eighth inning and overpowered the Woodchucks' lineup earning the two inning save. Of the six outs that Jones recorded, five of them were by means of the strikeout.
Jake Jefferies was 3-for-4 for the Woodchucks. He continues his hot week in which he is hitting a .455 batting average with 10 hits and six runs in his last five games.
The Woodchucks and Chinooks will finish their two-game series tomorrow night at Athletic Park. First pitch is set for 7:05 pm.
