Wood Ducks Win Series Finale against Shorebirds

SALISBURY, MD: The Delmarva Shorebirds (25-31) fell in the series finale to the Down East Wood Ducks (33-20) in Sunday's series finale 7-3.

Yosy Galan started the game for the Wood Ducks with a three-run homer in the first inning, his third straight game with a home run in the first put Down East ahead 3-0.

But the Shorebirds chipped away in the second on a double play off the bat of Angel Tejada that scored Isaac Bellony from third, making it a 3-1 game.

Delmarva then tied the game in the next frame on a two-run double with two outs by Ramon Rodriguez to even score at three.

It would remain a 3-3 game for a while as both pitching staffs settled in, including Juan Nuñez for the Shorebirds who pitched four innings of relief, dealing a career-best nine strikeouts.

But in the eighth, Yosy Galan struck again as he delivered another home run, sending one out of the ballpark to put Delmarva behind 4-3. They'd add on two more runs in the frame with a two-run double by JoJo Blackmon to up the lead for Down East to 6-3.

An additional run was scored in the ninth on an RBI single by Konner Piotto to make it 7-3 Wood Ducks. The 'Birds would go down in order in the bottom of the ninth as Down East secured a four-run victory to give them five out of six in the series.

Dylan MacLean (3-0) was the winning pitcher for the Wood Ducks in relief with Juan Nuñez (0-3) taking the loss for the Shorebirds.

Trendon Craig provided a strong day offensively for Delmarva as he collected a season-high three hits with two doubles on Sunday afternoon. Anderson De Los Santos had multiple hits for the third time in the series with Ramon Rodriguez providing both RBI in the game with his double in the third. The Delmarva pitchers struck out 17 batters for the second straight game, matching their season-best.

The Shorebirds head back on the road starting on Tuesday when they face their division rival, the Salem Red Sox. First pitch of the opening game is scheduled for 11:05 a.m.
