ROSEMONT, Ill.---The Chicago Wolves used two second-period goals to earn a 2-1 Amtrak Rivalry victory over the Milwaukee Admirals Friday night at the Allstate Arena.
Forward Michael Davies (G, A) and Bill Sweatt scored for Chicago, which won for a season-high fifth straight time and moved into a tie for first place in the Midwest Division with Charlotte.
"I thought this was a very good hockey game," said Wolves head coach Craig MacTavish. "It had a ton of intensity, battles and drama and we were able to hold on."
After a scoreless 20 minutes, Chicago (21-12-1-3) opened scoring 57 seconds into the second period. Davies skated in on a partial breakaway and snapped a shot from the high slot that Admirals goaltender Jeremy Smith stopped, but coughed up a rebound right back to Davies and he slammed the puck into an empty net.
Milwaukee (20-13-0-1) knotted the score 1-1 while on the power play at 6:19 of the middle frame. Center Blake Geoffrion held the puck at the far circle and sent a pass toward the high slot that deflected off the stick of Michael Latta and trickled through the legs of Wolves goaltender Matt Climie and over the goal line.
Climie (12-5-0) thwarted 32 of 33 shots in picking up his sixth win in his last seven starts.
The Wolves grabbed the game-winning goal with 1:01 remaining in the second stanza when Davies skated the puck in along the near boards and found a streaking Sweatt in the slot who flicked a shot past Smith top-shelf.
Smith (16-7-1) posted 32 saves.
