Mohegan Wolves News Release

NEW LONDON, Conn. (July 8, 2003) - Mohegan Wolves lineman Charlie Cook has been named the arenafootball2 ADT Defensive Player of the Week after his record-setting performance last Saturday night in the Wolves’ 38-26 home win over the Bossier City (La.) Battle Wings.

Cook becomes the first Wolves player to win a weekly league award this season. The honor comes on the strength of his strong solo performance on July 5 against the Battle Wings. Cook, a 6-foot, 290-pound lineman in his second af2 season, set two new team records on the night, one for most sacks in a single game (3.5) and one for most sacks in a single season (10.5). His final sack resulted in a safety to close out the game. Cook finished with a career-high 5.5 tackles.

“I think Charlie is well deserving of this honor for his performance on Saturday,“ Mohegan Head Coach Mark Stoute commented. “He really demonstrated his pass rush ability. He had the Bossier City quarterback on the move.

Cook actually broke his own record for most sacks in a game, setting the previous standard at three on May 16 in a 56-43 home win against the Richmond Speed. Fellow teammate Jeff Cogell owned the previous team record for most sacks in a season with 7.5, which he set in 2002.

Cook’s current season sack total of 10.5 also tops the league in that category.

The Wolves are currently 9-4 overall and stand poised to make their first postseason appearance in team history. Mohegan’s record has the team in fourth place in the American Conference playoff race. The top six teams from each conference (American and National) make the postseason.

The Wolves next game is this Friday, July 11 when the team travels to Richmond to play the Speed. Mohegan’s regular season home finale is set for July 18 against Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. On that night, every fan in attendance will receive a FREE team poster as part of “Fan Appreciation Night.” The posters are being provided courtesy of The Day and 103.7 FNX Radio.
