Mohegan Wolves News Release
NEW LONDON, Conn. (October 13, 2003) â Mohegan Wolves (arenafootball2) Assistant Coach Chris Bauer has been named to the football operations staff of the AFL's Indiana Firebirds, it was announced today by Indiana Head Coach Steve DeBerg. Bauer will serve as the team's Director of College Scouting and will be responsible for recruitment of potential players from across the country.
Bauer most recently served under Firebirds' Assistant Head Coach, Mark Stoute, during the 2003 season with the Wolves. As Mohegan's Director of Player Personnel, Bauer was a key component in helping Stoute reconstruct the Wolves and turn them from a walkover into a winner. In just one year, Mohegan more than tripled its win total (3-13 in 2002 to 10-6 in 2003) and made the playoffs for the first time in franchise history. In addition to his player personnel duties, Bauer also coached the special teams unit for Mohegan.
"Coach Bauer did a tremendous job for the Wolves this past year," team Vice President Angelo Mazzella said. "He was instrumental in bringing in a number of talented athletes that helped us turn things around here. I wish him the same success in his new efforts for Indiana.
Prior to his term with the Wolves, Bauer was the Director of Player Personnel and Special Teams Coach for the New Haven Ninjas (af2) during the 2002 season.
Bauer began his football career in 1997, serving as an assistant to the AFL Director of Operations, Jerry Trice. Bauer's duties included helping out with transactions, rosters, contracts, and various other league and team issues. Two years later, he moved to Connecticut where he co-developed Arena Scouting and Personnel (ASAP), a league-wide bulletin that recommends future AFL stars to coaches and general managers.
"Having someone like Chris on staff opens up a whole new pool of players which we can sign," said Firebirds Interim General Manager John Kolner. "His ability to find great players, across many different regions, will allow our coaching staff to add more depth to our roster and bring in the best possible talent for the upcoming season
Bauer is self employed, and has held memberships at the Chicago Mercantile, Chicago Board of Trade, and New York Board of Trade. A 1990 graduate of Bucknell University, Bauer currently resides in Fairfield, CT with his wife, Polly, and their three daughters, Caroline, Elizabeth and Alexandra.
