Chicago Wolves News Release
CLEVELAND, Ohio---The Chicago Wolves erupted for five straight goals and held off a late comeback to earn an eventual 5-4 victory over the Lake Erie Monsters at Quicken Loans Arena Wednesday night. Right wing Joey Crabb (G, A) and defenseman Jamie Rivers (2A) led the way for Chicago (11-3-1-1) with two points each, while five different Wolves found the back of the net in the win. Lake Erie (5-9-0-1) opened scoring, 4:33 into the first period with a marker from right wing Brian Willsie, before left wing Jordan LaVallee kicked off the Wolves' offensive explosion when he flipped a shot past Lake Erie goaltender Jason Bacashihua just under two minutes later.
Crabb added a shorthanded goal at 11:52 of the first frame to make the score 2-1, when bluelinder Jamie Rivers brought the puck along the boards and slid a pass to Crabb, who flicked a shot into the net. Chicago made its lead two, 3-1, when center Steve Martins skated up the ice and faked a shot before sliding the puck to an open right wing Joe Motzko, who blasted a shot past Bacashihua at 17:15 of the middle frame. Less than two minutes later, center Matt Anderson collected a cross-ice pass from left wing Brett Sterling and sent a one-timer deep into the net to put the Wolves up 4-1. Chicago continued the offensive onslaught in the third period when center Riley Holzapfel banged a rebound by Bacashihua 70 seconds into the final frame. Bacashihua (2-6-0-1) posted 17 saves on 22 shots. Lake Erie center Marty Sertich broke the Wolves streak of five unanswered goals, picking up his own rebound and roofing a shot over Wolves goaltender Dan Turple, 4:38 into the third frame to make the score 5-2. Turple (4-0-0) stopped 22 shots in the win. The Monsters pulled within striking distance, 5-3, with right wing Chris Stewart took a feed from Sertich at the top of the goal mouth and sent the puck by Turple at 15:47 of the final frame. Sertich added his second of the game and the Monsters' fourth tally with 25 seconds left to play, but it was too late to complete the comeback.
The Wolves return to Illinois to face the Quad City Flames on Friday at I Wireless Center at 7:30 p.m.
