Norfolk Admirals News Release
WORCESTER, MA - Paul Szczechura netted a goal and an assist and Brandon Bochenski had two assists on Wednesday night at the DCU Center. However, the Norfolk Admirals (4-8-1-3) fell 4-3 to the Worcester Sharks (7-8-0-0).
The Admirals jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the game's second minute. Paul Szczechura collected a loose puck with his back facing the net. He then simultaneously spun around and fired a shot along the ice that went between the legs of Worcester backstop Taylor Dakers at 1:30 of the opening frame.
After back-to-back Shark penalties a few minutes later, the Admirals cashed in on a two-man advantage. After surveying his options for several seconds at the bottom of the right faceoff circle, Wyatt Smith sent a quick wrist shot top-shelf, glove-side at 6:05.
Worcester closed their gap to one goal just over eight minutes later off a faceoff. Jason Demers sent a wrist shot from the right point that deflected off an Admirals forward in the right circle before being deflected a second time, this time by the goal scorer Tom Cavanagh, who put the puck past Norfolk netminder Karri Ramo at 14:20.
The Sharks tied the game only 32 seconds into the second period. Mike Moore's shot got past a screened Ramo for a power play goal to knot the score at 2-2. The Admirals killed off a five-minute major penalty to Steve Downie later that period - including two full minutes of a two-man disadvantage - as the teams skated to the locker rooms tied at two goals apiece after two periods.
Worcester took a 3-2 lead 4:10 into the final frame. As a Sharks power play expired, Demers sent a pass from the right point to Cory Larose at the opposite post for a quick tap-in goal. The Worcester lead doubled at 9:55 when Brendan Buckley's shot from the right point was deflected past Ramo by Andrew Desjardins.
The Admirals pulled Ramo for the extra attacker late in the period and Jamie Heward drew Norfolk to within a goal just moments later. After Szczechura's initial wraparound shot was denied, Szczechura picked up the rebound and circled back to the opposite post before feeding Heward at the right faceoff dot. Heward sent a slap shot through a screen and into the net with 46.5 seconds remaining. However, the Admirals could not get the equalizer past Dakers.
Karri Ramo (32 shots, 28 saves) took the loss. Taylor Dakers (27 shots, 24 saves) recorded the win.
Norfolk was 1-5 on the power play. Worcester was 1-4.
