CHARLOTTE, N.C. --- The Chicago Wolves scored two unanswered goals in the second period to defeat the Charlotte Checkers 2-1 Thursday night at the Time Warner Cable Arena.

Goaltender Jake Allen stopped 31 of 32 shots, including all 16 he faced in the third period, while defenseman David Shields (G, A) and forward Nathan Longpre supplied the offense for Chicago (5-6-0-1).

Charlotte (5-5-0-1) struck first as right wing Adam Brace picked up a deflection off Allen Allen (5-3-1) in front of the net to beat him stick-side 4:22 into the second period.

Just over a minute later, Chicago responded on a delayed penalty call against the Checkers. Center Alexandre Bolduc moved into the offensive zone 1-on-3, forcing Charlotte's defenders to take a penalty to deter him. Before Charlotte could gain possession to stop play, Shields received the puck near the faceoff circle and beat goaltender John Muse with a quick shot.

Shields also played an integral role in Chicago's goal late in the second frame, the eventual game-winner. Shields intercepted a Charlotte pass just inside the blue line and fed it towards the net to Longpre, who capitalized.

Muse (3-1-0) made 24 saves for his first lost of the season.

The Wolves remain in Charlotte for a rematch against the Checkers at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 9.
