Brockton Rox News Release
Brockton, Mass. - Rox starter Mike Wlodarczyk was masterful, limiting first-place Quebec to a run on three hits in seven innings of work as Brockton defeated the Capitales, 3-1, in Can-Am League action at Campanelli Stadium on Friday night.
After dropping the first two games of the four-game set, the Rox move back to two and one-half games behind Quebec for the top spot in the league. The victory marked the 400th win in franchise history for Brockton.
The Rox (19-12) drew first blood with a pair of runs in the second inning, as 3B Phillip Cuadrado led off the frame with a solo shot. After LF Mike Conroy rapped a two-out single later in the inning, C Chris Grossman brought him home with a double to make it 2-0, Rox.
The Capitales (22-10) returned fire in the fourth; C Patrick D'Aoust led off the inning with a walk, moved to second on RF Jared Lemieux's groundout, to third on 1B Anthony Cros' single, and came home on LF Brendan Rowland's sacrifice fly, halving the Brockton lead.
Brockton increased their lead to 3-1 the following inning, with Grossman walking to lead off the inning and scoring on CF Chris Valencia's RBI double.
It was enough offense for Wlodarczyk (5-1), who fanned seven hitters, giving him a total of 45 on the season and extending his league lead in the category over teammate Mike Smith, currently second with 36. The lefthander is also the first hurler in the league with five wins on the season.
In his first start of the year for the Capitales, former major-leaguer Troy Cate (0-1) was the hard-luck losing pitcher, throwing an eight-inning complete game and striking out ten while allowing just four hits.
Cros was the only player on either club with more than one hit, going 2-for-2 with a pair of walks on the night.
The two teams will meet in the fourth and final game of the series on Friday evening at 7:05 p.m., with Quebec's Andy Schon (1-0) facing Brockton's Freddy Flores (4-0). The evening will also feature a post-game fireworks display. The show, done in conjunction with the Brockton Fair, will start at 11:15 p.m. or when the Rox game finishes, whichever happens first. If there is a significant amount of time in between the conclusion of the game and the fireworks show, fans will be invited onto the field to run the bases and watch entertainment on the Campanelli Stadium video board before the fireworks.
