New Jersey Jackals News Release

Little Falls, NJ - Center fielder Carl Loadenthal laced a two-run, broken-bat single with the bases loaded and two outs in the top of the tenth inning as the Sussex Skyhawks defeated the New Jersey Jackals 7-5 in ten innings on Thursday night at Yogi Berra Stadium.

Trailing 5-4 with Sussex closer Duaner Sanchez on for the bottom of the ninth, the Jackals mounted three straight singles to begin the frame with left fielder Jacob Butler driving home second baseman Argenis Reyes to knot the score at five and send the game into extra innings.

Jackals' reliever Mike Pontius, who pitched a scoreless ninth, loaded the bases in the tenth on three walks before Loadenthal ripped a base hit through the left side to plate outfielders Kade Keowen and Kraig Binick and give the Skyhawks a 7-5 advantage. Sanchez (1-0) returned to the mound in home half of the tenth and, after allowing a leadoff single to third baseman Abraham Nunez, retired the side to notch his first victory of the season. Pontius (0-1) suffered the loss after surrendering two runs on 1 2/3 innings as the Jackals used six pitchers in the loss.

Loadenthal gave the Skyhawks an early lead when he lifted a solo home run in the top of the first. Jackals' designated hitter Shawn Riggans responded with a two-run, two-out single in the bottom of the first to give New Jersey a 2-1 advantage. However, a solo blast off the bat of first baseman Kris Sanchez in the top of the second evened the score at two.

Sussex regained a two-run lead in the top of the third on a pair of RBI doubles by Binick and designated hitter Caleb Stewart. However, the Jackals countered again in the bottom of the fifth when center fielder Jeff Grose walked and right fielder Kevin Clark doubled off the wall in right center before scoring on an RBI groundout off the bat of Reyes and a Butler sacrifice fly respectively to make it a 4-4 game. Sussex jumped back ahead 5-4 in the top of the seventh on a pair of infield singles by shortstop Chase Fontaine and Stewart.

Neither starter factored in the decision with New Jersey's Dan Griffin yielding four runs on six hits in 4 1/3 and Sussex righty Jusef Frias allowing four runs on six hits over six frames. Jackals' relievers Luis Fernandez and Edward Rodriguez each contributed 1 2/3 scoreless innings while Matt Salvato held the Jackals off the board during his two-inning stint out of the bullpen.

The Jackals and Skyhawks conclude their five-game series on Friday at 7:05 p.m. at Yogi Berra Stadium when New Jersey sends righty Nick Asselin (1-4, 6.75) to the mound against Sussex right-hander Mike McGuire (3-3, 5.14). Cody Chrusciel has the live call on the Jackals webcast beginning 10 minutes prior to first pitch at www.jackals.com.
