Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

Waterloo, Iowa-Waterloo Black Hawks defenseman Mitch Witek is the United States Hockey League's CCM Defensive Player of the Week after helping the Hawks to a pair of victories, the USHL announced Monday.

Facing the Dubuque Fighting Saints Friday, Witek's steal in the neutral zone set up the opening goal by Taylor Cammarata early in the second period. Less than two minutes later with his team shorthanded, Witek pounded a puck out of the zone, creating a shorthanded score by Vince Hinostroza. Witek finished the game +3. In Saturday's matchup against the Indiana Ice he collected another early assist during a power play, got into a scrap with R.J. Boyd, and was +1 as the Hawks played the second and third periods with only three natural defenseman due to several game misconducts.

Waterloo acquired Witek from the Green Bay Gamblers in the days leading up to the start of the USHL regular season. He has six points in 14 appearances (five in his last three), after recording one assist in his first 45 USHL contests prior to 2011-2012.

"In our system this year, Mitch has had the chance to play, and he is showing what we knew he was capable of," said Hawks coach P.K. O'Handley. "He and the rest of our defensemen have created a lot of opportunities during the last three games."

Witek is the first Black Hawk player to be chosen for one of the league's weekly awards this season.

The Black Hawks begin their Thanksgiving week games on the road Tuesday in Ann Arbor, Michigan, facing Team USA. Party Town will be the site of the Hawk's traditional Thanksgiving game against the Cedar Rapids RoughRidersThursday night at 7:05. Then Waterloo visits Cedar Rapids Ice Arena on Saturday.
