Peoria Chiefs News Release

Appleton, WI - Cardinals 2021 first-round draft pick Michael McGreevy twirled five hitless innings in his High-A debut but a late rally from Wisconsin gave the Timber Rattlers a 7-6 victory in 10 innings Saturday.

The Chiefs bats came out of the gates hot, with a three-run outburst in the second inning. Catcher Aaron Antonini hit a long home run to right field, a two-run shot, to give Peoria a 2-0 stronghold. On the next pitch, Tommy Jew homered to left field to make it a 3-0 game.

From there, McGreevy dominated a Wisconsin lineup that featured a heavy dose of left-handed hitters. A second inning walk was the lone baserunner that he surrendered on the afternoon.

In the sixth, it was Antonini again. The 23-year-old brought home a pair of runners with a line drive single to left. His four RBI's tied his career-high and extended the Peoria lead to 5-0.

The Timber Rattlers scratched a run in the sixth and again in the seventh to cut the lead to 5-2. Upon entering the bottom of the eighth, Wisconsin had not yet registered a hit. A lead-off double from Tristan Peters broke the Timber Rattlers into the hit column. All told, they pieced together three hits in the frame and knotted the game, 5-5.

In the ninth, the Chiefs had a late response. With two outs in the inning, Masyn Winn reached on a two-out error, keeping the door open for LJ Jones. With two strikes, doubled off the left field wall to give the Chiefs a 6-5 bulge. Wisconsin responded with a bloop single from Sal Frelick to tie the game and send it to extras.

In the top of the tenth, the Chiefs loaded the bases with two outs, but a broken bat grounder ended the inning. With two outs in the home half of the inning, Ernesto Martinez singled to right to win it for Wisconsin.

The series concludes tomorrow with a doubleheader. Both games will be seven innings, with game one set for a 1:10 first pitch. Gordon Graceffo is slated to start game one, while Dionys Rodriguez is the probable for game two.
