Quad Cities River Bandits News Release

South Bend, Indiana - Despite losing a one-run lead in the bottom of the ninth, the Quad Cities River Bandits outscored the South Bend Cubs in the tenth to secure a 4-3 victory on Opening Day at Four Winds Field.

After Bandits' starter, Christian Chamberlain stuck out Alexander Canario and Yohendrick Pinango to strand a pair of Cubs in scoring position in the top of the first, Kale Emshoff gave Quad Cities the first lead of the season, leading off the second with an opposite-field solo smash off of Cubs' right hander Chris Clarke.

South Bend threatened again in the bottom of the second, but after two Chamberlain walks, Anthony Simoneli made an early entrance out of the bullpen and worked out of a bases-loaded jam as part of a 4.2 innings evening of relief.

Quad Cities saw its lead grow to 3-0 in the top of the third thanks to Luca Tresh's second hit of the game, a two-strike, two-out, two-run single that plated Tyler Tolbert and Tyler Gentry.

The Cubs broke through offensively in the bottom of the fourth on Fabian Pertuz's two-run blast that trimmed the River Bandits lead to 3-2, but Simoneli would allow just one South Bend base runner over the next 2.2 frames.

In the top of the fifth, Q.C. had a chance to re-extend its lead, getting men to second and third with one out, but Dalton Stambaugh matched Simoneli's mid-inning relief efforts and retired nine of the next ten batters he faced.

Quad Cities' Walter Pennington kept the Cubs off the board with a pair of scoreless innings in the seventh and eighth, but the Bandits were unable to insure their one-run lead as Hunter Bigge faced the minimum in the eighth before striking out the side in order in the top of the ninth.

Looking for three outs and his first save of 2022, Kasey Kalich got tasked with the final three outs for Quad Cities, but a leadoff walk and a single helped the Cubs load the bases for Ed Howard, who drove in the game-tying run with a sacrifice fly to send the game to extra innings.

Although Tolbert popped up his sacrifice bunt attempt in the top of the tenth, an Emshoff fly ball allowed placed runner, Diego Hernandez to advance to third with two outs, where Tresh would plate the go-ahead run with his third hit and third RBI of the game via a line drive to left field off of Bailey Reid

The next batter, Burle Dixon singled to right field, but Tresh would be thrown out at third before Gentry, who reached earlier in the inning with a walk, could cross home plate and make it a two-run contest.

In the bottom of the tenth, Kalich retook the bump for Quad Cities and used a pair of ground balls and a strikeout of Pablo Aliendo to strand the placed runner and tying run at third.

Despite blowing a save, Kalich (1-0) got the win for the River Bandits, after two innings of work, while Reed was tagged with the loss, giving up one unearned run on two hits and a walk.

The River Bandits will send right-hander Noah Murdock (0-0) to the mound for game two of the series tomorrow and South Bend will counter with DJ Herz (0-0) for the 4:05pm ET first pitch at Four Winds Field.
