South Bend Cubs News Release

Appleton, WI - The South Bend Cubs arrived to the State of Wisconsin for a 12-game road trip and got started in the best they could've hoped by winning both Tuesday and Wednesday against the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers. Now, the tides have turned with Wisconsin winning the last three, including Saturday afternoon over the Cubs by a final of 4-2.

Now 17-15 on the season, the Cubs will hope for a series split with Wisconsin on Sunday afternoon before they head two hours south to Beloit to begin a new six-game series.

Saturday afternoon got started in a positive way for Wisconsin, as they plated their first two runs on identical plays in both the 1st and 3rd innings. Tyler Santana got the start for the Cubs and allowed a lead-off base hit in both frames to Eric Brown Jr. Two batters later, Brown was singled home each time by Ben Metzinger.

The two RBI singles for Metzinger did not hold long though, as the Cubs tied things up in the 4th and got to righty Joseph Hernandez for the first time.

Yohendrick Pinango took a walk to begin the 4th, he ended up with two on the day and now has 20 on the year. Pinango had 30 total walks last year in 115 games. This season, he has 20 free passes in 30 games.

With Pinango on, Fabian Pertuz reached on an error, and Bryce Ball stepped up. On a little floater smacked towards left, Ball drove in two and the Cubs had tied it at 2-2. In four games back with the Cubs, Ball has three RBI.

Wisconsin has shown all week their ability to rally quickly. They reclaimed the lead right back in the bottom of the 5th. Santana worked four complete innings and struck out two, but he allowed two hits to start the 5th. He was taken out of the game, and Adam Laskey entered. Laskey worked through a bases loaded situation, but a run came home on a wild pitch. That was the game deciding tally.

Offensively, South Bend's bats were unable to produce against Wisconsin righty Edwin Jimenez. The bullpen arm for the Rattlers worked three perfect innings.

In the 9th, Bo Bowman finished off his second save of the series, and the Rattlers took the win. Wisconsin can win the series with another victory tomorrow, as South Bend goes for the split. First pitch time is scheduled for 2:10 PM EST.
