Winterhawks Weekly: Points Piling Up; Hall of Fame Induction Ahead
March 13, 2023 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Portland Winterhawks News Release
The Winterhawks hit the road for two divisional tilts last week, taking three of four possible points against Spokane and Tri-City over the weekend. A dominant third period fueled Portland's 5-2 win over the Chiefs on Friday, and the resurgent Hawks roared back from a two-goal hole on Saturday to force overtime and take a point in Tri-City.
Coming up, the Hawks hit the ice for three games this week. It all kicks off tomorrow at home against Spokane, then shifts to Seattle on Friday before the Hawks and T-Birds return to the VMC on Saturday for Oregon Hockey History Night and the induction of the Portland Winterhawks Hall of Fame class of 2023!
Hot Hawks:
Forward Josh Zakreski tallied the game-winning goal in Spokane on Friday, then set up Luke Schelter's game-tying goal on Saturday to help the Hawks take three points on the weekend. The rookie is up to 19 points in 61 games this year.
Forward Marcus Nguyen scored in both games last week to push his point streak to four games (3G, 1A). The Calgary, Alta. native has scored in four of his last six games and ranks third in team scoring during the month of March.
Forward Robbie Fromm-Delorme also found twine twice last weekend, netting a double to pace the team's win on Friday. The two goals marked his first career 30-goal season as the Richmond, B.C. product continues a career-best campaign.
Defenseman Luca Cagnoni chipped in a pair of assists in Friday's win and now sits one point shy of 100 for his career. The top 2023 NHL Draft prospect has found the scoresheet in all but one game this month, notching six points in five total contests.
Defenseman Ryder Thompson also set up two goals on Friday for his second multi-point game of the season. Thompson has now matched last season's scoring total in seven fewer games, with 18 points in 51 outings this year.
Play of the Week:
Calm, cool and collected. That's Josh Zakreski as he shows great poise to net the game-winning goal in Spokane on Friday. After Ryder Thompson and Luca Cagnoni cycle the puck around the top of the zone, Zakreski sees his chance and makes no mistake with a top-shelf tuck to put Portland ahead for good. ⤵ï¸Â
Weekly Rewind:
Portland 5 at Spokane 2 (Friday):
A three-goal third period amidst four unanswered goals saw the Winterhawks win their second straight game, knocking off the Chiefs 5-2 in Spokane on Friday.
Portland 2 at Tri-City 3 OT (Saturday):
Marcus Nguyen and Luke Schelter each scored in the third period to erase a two-goal deficit and help the Winterhawks earn a point, but a Reese Belton penalty shot in overtime sealed a 3-2 victory for the Americans on Saturday.
