Portland Winterhawks News Release

Portland, Ore. - The Portland Winterhawks Hockey Club is proud to announce today that Marek Alscher has signed a three-year, entry-level contract with the Florida Panthers of the National Hockey League.

Originally selected by the Panthers in the third round, #93 overall, of the 2022 NHL Draft, Alscher has excelled in his second season of North American hockey. Florida's first pick of the draft has already set a new career high this season 21 points (7G-14A) in 54 games, and ranks third among Winterhawks defensemen this season with seven goals. The Kladno, Czechia native has also played top-line minutes on the team's penalty kill, which ranks in the top five in the WHL, while also logging time on the Hawks' power play.

Alscher, 18, has played in 115 career games with Portland, amassing 36 points and a plus-14 rating. The 6-foot-3, 196-pound defenseman is an excellent shot blocker and provides a physical presence on the ice.

Alscher was originally selected by the Winterhawks in the first round, #26 overall, of the 2021 CHL Import Draft after a strong season with the Lahti Pelicans U18 clubs in Finland. On the international stage, Alscher represented his country at the 2021 Glinka Gretzky Cup and served as an alternate player during Czechia's silver medal performance at the 2022 IIHF World Junior Championships as an underage defenseman.

Alscher will remain in Portland for the duration of the 2023 WHL Playoffs and he maintains two more years of WHL eligibility should Florida elect to continue his development in the Rose City.
