Winterhawks Weekly: Back in First Place

January 29, 2024 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Portland Winterhawks News Release

The Winterhawks reclaimed first place in the WHL's Western Conference with three wins in three nights last weekend - all against divisional foes. Wins over Tri-City, Spokane and Seattle have the Winterhawks cruising with 65 points heading into another busy stretch of four games in five nights this weekend!

Hot Hawks:

Forward James Stefan picked up an assist on Friday, then scored twice to help the Winterhawks beat Spokane on Saturday. Stefan has recorded five multi-point performances in 10 games this month and ranks second on the team with 30 goals.

Forward Nate Danielson recorded four assists across last week's three games and has found the scoresheet in all six games played as a Winterhawk. The Detroit Red Wings first-rounder is up two goals, five assists and seven points in that span.

Forward Gabe Klassen earned first-star honors with two goals in Friday's win over Tri-City, then followed up with an assist in Spokane. The Hawks' captain ranks fifth in WHL scoring with 76 points in 45 games.

Defenseman Luca Cagnoni led all Winterhawks in scoring for the second straight week, notching five points (1G, 4A) in three games. Cagnoni also entered the top 10 in Winterhawks history in both assists (126) and points (162) by a defenseman.

Defenseman Tyson Jugnauth posted one assist on Friday, then starred in Sunday's win over Seattle with three points, including the game-winning goal. Jugnauth has 18 points in 18 games with the Winterhawks since joining the team in December.

Play of the Week:

How good was Tyson Jugnauth on Sunday? The Seattle Kraken prospect has been in fine form since joining the Winterhawks, averaging a point-per-game pace through 18 contests, and bagged his second three-point showing with two assists and this game-winner against the T-Birds!

Portland 5 at Tri-City 4 (Friday):

Two goals from Gabe Klassen and 23 saves from Nick Avakyan helped the Winterhawks hold off the Tri-City Americans 3-2 at Toyota Center on Friday night.

Portland 5 at Spokane 4 (Saturday):

A fast start and stingy defense down the stretch helped the Winterhawks hold off the Spokane Chiefs for a 5-4 win on the road on Saturday.

Portland 4 vs. Seattle 1 (Sunday):

Tyson Jugnauth led the way with his second three-point performance of the year as the Winterhawks cruised past the Seattle Thunderbirds 4-1 to complete a three-game weekend sweep.
