Winterhawks Fall 7-6 in Game 6 in Kamloops

The Portland Winterhawks fell 7-6 to the Kamloops Blazers Monday in Game 6 of their second round series. The series is now tied 3-3, with Game 7 Wednesday night at 7 p.m. in Veterans Memorial Coliseum.

Portland opened the scoring on a goal by defenseman Derrick Pouliot at the 6:46 mark of the first, but Kamloops tied it 29 seconds later on a goal by Brendan Ranford. The tie would last just 51 seconds though, as Portland's Brad Ross quickly responded with a power play goal to put the Hawks back up 2-1.

The Blazers once again evened it when Bronson Maschmeyer scored at the 14:03 mark, but Portland took their third lead of period when Ross notched his second power play goal of the period at the 17:32 mark to give the Hawks a 3-2 lead going into the second period.

They extended the lead to 4-2 when Oliver Gabriel scored 6:43 into the second. It was Gabriel's first game back after serving a four-game suspension after a collision with Kamloops netminder Cole Cheveldave in Game 1. Brendan Leipsic then scored a power play goal at the 11:24 mark to give Portland a 5-2 lead they took into the third period.

The Blazers tied the game at 5-5 in the third when they got goals from Marek Hrbas, Jordan DePape and Aspen Sterzer 3:05 apart. After the Blazers' Colin Smith scored a power play goal at the 15:21 mark to give Kamloops a 6-5 lead, Cam Reid responded just 26 seconds later for the Hawks to even the game once again at 6-6.

With 20 seconds to go in the third and the game still tied 6-6, Maschmeyer scored his second of the game for Kamloops to give them the 7-6 win.

Portland finished 3-5 on the power play, and 3-5 on the penalty kill.
