Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
Brandon, MB. -- The American Hockey League's Abbotsford Heat has announced that Brandon Wheat Kings' left-winger Michael Ferland has joined the club for the upcoming Calder Cup Playoffs.
A fifth round draft choice of the National Hockey League's Calgary Flames, Ferland's 2012 Western Hockey League playoff run ended last Tuesday when he suffered an injury in game three of the WHL's Eastern Conference Semi-Finals against Edmonton. That prevented the 19-year old local product from playing in the Wheat Kings' loss to the Oil Kings in game four of the best of seven series.
In eight playoff games this spring, Ferland scored three goals and six points.
During the 2011-12 regular season, he enjoyed a banner year setting career highs for goals (47), assists (49) and points (96). His 96 points were ninth best in the WHL this past season.
In three years with Brandon, Ferland averaged close to a point per game with 79 goals and 180 points in 185 career games. As well, he accumulated 276 minutes in penalties.
The Heat will face off against the Milwaukee Admirals in the AHL Western Conference Quarterfinal series, which is set to begin this weekend.
