Winterhawks Fall 5-1 in Game 3 in Kamloops; Lead Series 2-1

The Portland Winterhawks fell 5-1 Tuesday in Kamloops in Game 3 of the Western Conference Final. The Hawks still lead the series 2-1.

The Hawks struck first when Ty Rattie scored on a 5-on-3 power play 5:32 into the game to give Portland a 1-0 lead. The Blazers tied it when Colin Smith tipped in a goal on a power play at the 16:37 mark to make it 1-1 after 20 minutes.

Kamloops then struck early in the second with a goal from Joel Edmundson 1:06 into the second to take a 2-1 lead, then made it 3-1 at the 8:02 mark on a goal by Aaron Macklin. Kamloops later made it 5-1 when Tim Bozon scored a pair of goals 2:08 apart, a lead they took into the third period.

The Hawks fought hard to get back in the game in the third period as they outshot the Blazers 12-3 in the final frame, but Kamloops netminder Cole Cheveldave turned away each attempt as they finished with the 5-1 win. Cheveldave stopped 35 of the 36 shots Portland took Tuesday.

Both teams were 1-5 on the power play.

Rattie's first period goal was the 44th of his postseason career, bringing him within three of Mark Pederson, the WHL's all-time record holder. It was also his 85th career postseason point, as he closes within one point of Brad Moran for third in league history.

The two teams meet again tomorrow for Game 4, starting at 7 p.m. Game 5 of the series will be Friday at the Rose Garden at 7 p.m.
