Portland Winterhawks News Release
The Portland Winterhawks (8-7-1-1) took on the Kootenay Ice (11-3-0-2) in Cranbrook, B.C. Saturday in a rematch of last year's WHL Final, and the Ice came away with a 4-1 win.
After a scoreless first period, the Ice opened the scoring 6:33 into the second on a goal by Erik Benoit. The Hawks evened the game a little under two minutes later when defenseman Tyler Wotherspoon scored his first of the season on a power play to even the game at 1-1. The Ice regained the lead with 2:02 remaining in the second when Max Reinhart scored a shorthanded goal to take a 2-1 lead into the third period.
The Ice took a two-goal lead 1:39 into the third when Benoit tallied his second of the game to make it 3-1. The Hawks outshot the Ice throughout the third as they tried to even the game, but with under a minute remaining and Portland netminder Mac Carruth on the bench for an extra attacker, Reinhart scored his second of the night into the empty net to give the Ice the 4-1 win.
Carruth made 25 saves on the 28 shots he faced, while Kootenay goaltender Nathan Lieuwen made 28 saves on 29 Portland shots.
The Hawks were a perfect 6-6 on the penalty kill, and 1-6 on the power play.
The Hawks have concluded the Central Division portion of their nine-game road trip, and will now travel to Kamloops, B.C. to take on the Blazers Wednesday night.
