Everett Silvertips News Release
CALGARY, AB - The Everett Silvertips were a perfect 7-for-7 killing penalties, but managed a season-low 16 shots on goal in a 3-1 loss to the Calgary Hitmen Saturday night at the Scotiabank Saddledome. The 'Tips are now 2-3 on their nine-game road trip and will have two days off before facing the Medicine Hat Tigers on Tuesday.
Jari Erricson scored the lone goal for Everett, who got another strong 39-save effort from Kent Simpson in goal. Although Calgary outshot the Silvertips 42-16, the game was tied at one until the Hitmen took the lead for good late in the second period.
Calgary jumped out to an early shot advantage and took a 1-0 lead when Cody Sylvester's shot from the high slot caromed off the end boards, over the crossbar, off Kent Simpson's back and into the net. The Silvertips evened it up on a rebound chance as Jari Erricson picked up the puck in front and stickhandled around prone goaltender Chris Driedger before tucking it inside the post for his second goal of the season. The Hitmen held had a 17-4 shot edge through 20 minutes, but the score remained tied at one.
Everett killed off three Calgary powerplays in the first half of the middle period to keep the game score even. The 'Tips then got their first powerplay opportunity of the game late in the period, but it was the Hitmen who would capitalize. Just 27 seconds before the intermission, Trevor Cheek used an Everett defenseman as a screen and sent a long wrist shot into the top corner of Simpson's net to give Calgary a 2-1 edge after two.
The Silvertips stayed within one thanks to two more successful penalty kills in the third, but Calgary's Jimmy Bubnick added an insurance goal on a rebound midway through the period as the Hitmen held on for the 3-1 victory. Kent Simpson (4-8-0-1) took the loss despite the 39 saves, while Chris Driedger (4-2-0-1) finished with 15 stops in the win. Everett went 0 for 3 on the powerplay but killed off all seven Hitmen powerplays in the contest.
The Silvertips will be back in action Tuesday night in Medicine Hat, Albera, where they will take on the Tigers at 6:00 pm Pacific Time, with pre-game radio coverage starting at 5:30 pm on Fox Sports 1380 AM.
