Portland Winterhawks News Release

The Portland Winterhawks earned a point in the standings Saturday, dropping a 3-2 decision at home to the Seattle Thunderbirds.

The Winterhawks dominated the first period, although it was Seattle who got on the board first 7:19 into the game on a goal by Burke Gallimore. But the Winterhawks took over from there. They evened the score at 1-1 at the 10:45 mark. With Tayler Jordan forechecking behind the net the puck came out to Brendan Leipsic at the side of the net, who fed it across to Taylor Peters, who beat Calvin Pickard for his first goal of the season.

Five minutes later, Ryan Johansen, playing his first game of the season after being returned to the Winterhawks from the Columbus Blue Jackets, fed Brad Ross, who got in behind the defense, cut across the crease and put a backhand over Pickard's glove to make it 2-1. The Winterhawks outshot Seattle 22-3 in the period.

Seattle scored the only goal of the second period when Mitch Elliot pounced on a puck that had bounced off the end boards in front of the net, putting it past Portland netminder Keith Hamilton to make it 2-2.

The two teams were scoreless in the third period, sending the game to overtime. Both teams traded two shots apiece in the extra frame, but neither could get the winner, necessitating a shootout.

Ty Rattie took the puck for Portland first, but he was stopped by Pickard. Hamilton then stopped an attempt by Seattle's Burke Gallimore. In the second round of the shootout, Pickard stopped Spencer Bennett, but on Seattle's second attempt Marcel Noebels put it in to give Seattle a 1-0 advantage. Johansen got the puck on Portland's third attempt looking to keep the Winterhawks alive, but Pickard stopped him to go a perfect 3-3 and give Seattle the win.

Pickard was solid throughout the night for the Thunderbirds, stopping 44 of Portland's 46 shots, along with the three shootout attempts. Hamilton made 31 saves on 33 shots.

Johansen arrived at the rink approximately one hour before the game started, having been returned to the Winterhawks by the Columbus Blue Jackets, who selected him fourth overall in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft.

The Winterhawks return to the ice tomorrow night when they host the Lethbridge Hurricanes at 5 p.m. at the rose Garden.
