Portland Winterhawks News Release
The Portland Winterhawks got three points apiece from Ty Rattie and Sven Bartschi as they earned a 6-2 win over the visiting Lethbridge Hurricanes Sunday at the Rose Garden to improve their record to 3-1-0-1.
With his three points tonight, Rattie leads the Winterhawks with eight points in five games this season. Bartschi's three points tonight gives him six on the season, tying him for first among all WHL rookies. And with a goal tonight, Brad Ross has scored at least one goal in each of the four games he's played, with five total, tying him for second in the WHL.
The Winterhawks opened the scoring 6:46 into the game, when Rattie's stick broke while taking a shot from the half boards. The puck ended up going across the ice to a waiting Bartschi, who put it past Hurricanes netminder Brandon Anderson for his first WHL goal, giving the Winterhawks a 1-0 lead they would take into the second period.
Lethbridge tied the game 9:36 into the second period on a goal by Alex Kuvaev, but the Winterhawks came right back. Brendan Leipsic was interfered with on a breakaway, earning a penalty shot at the 10:15 mark. On his penalty shot attempt, Leipsic took a backhand shot that went over Anderson's glove and into the net to make it 2-1 for the Winterhawks.
The Hurricanes evened the game when Austin Fyten scored at the 13:48 mark to make it 2-2. But the Winterhawks responded with two goals in a span of 1:12. The first came on a two-on-one when Rattie fed Troy Rutkowski, who put it in for his first goal of the season. After Rutkowski's goal, the Hurricanes took a penalty and Portland responded on the ensuing power play when Ryan Johansen found Riley Boychuk alone in the slot, with Boychuk firing it past Anderson for his first goal of the season to make it 4-2, a lead that would hold until the third period.
The Hurricanes took consecutive penalties early in the third, giving Portland a two-man advantage for 51 seconds. Portland made the most of the power play, as Rattie fed a pass across the crease to Bartschi for his second of the game to make it 5-2. The Winterhawks slammed the door on Lethbridge from there, adding one more goal with just over three minutes to go from Ross to finish with a 6-2 win.
Keith Hamilton got the win in net for Portland, stopping 30 of the 32 shots he faced. The Hurricanes' Brandon Anderson made 33 saves on 39 Portland shots. The Winterhawks were 2-7 on the power play, and a perfect 7-7 on the penalty kill.
The Winterhawks open a three-game road trip Wednesday in Everett, followed by games Friday and Saturday in Spokane. They return home next Wednesday, October 13, to host the reigning WHL champion Calgary Hitmen at the Memorial Coliseum.
