
Winterhawks defeat Seattle

Kent - Brendan Rouse scored his 6th goal of the season and Calvin Pickard made 35 saves as the Portland Winterhawks defeated the Seattle Thunderbirds by a final score of 3-1 on Saturday night at the ShoWare Center.
Portland (44-25-2-1) jumped out to a 1-0 lead on Brad Ross' 27th goal of the season at 10:48 of the first. Ryan Johansen had the only assist.
After one period of play, the T-Birds held the advantage in shots, 16-4. Seattle (18-41-7-5) outshot Portland 11-8 during a scoreless second period and held the overall shot advantage 27-12.
The Winterhawks extended their lead to 2-0 at 7:13 of the third period on Ryan Johansen's 25th goal of the season. Taylor Aronson and Ross both registered assists on the goal.
Seattle cut Portland's lead to 2-1 on a powerplay-goal by Brendan Rouse at 12:56 of the third period. Tyler Alos gained control of the puck along the left boards and made a centering pass to Rouse, who was waiting by himself in front of Portland goalie Mac Carruth. Rouse received the pass and put a quick shot on net that Carruth initially stopped, but Rouse grabbed his own rebound and beat a sprawling Carruth for his 6th goal of the season. Brenden Dillon also assisted on the goal.
Portland sealed the victory at 19:25 of the third on an empty-net goal by Nino Niederreiter, his 36th goal of the season.
The Winterhawks outshot the T-Birds 24-13 during the third period, leaving Seattle with a 40-36 advantage for the game.
Seattle goalie Calvin Pickard (15-34-7-5) made 33 saves on 35 shots.
Portland goalie Mac Carruth (14-9-1-0) made 39 saves on 40 shots to earn the victory.
The T-Birds conclude the regular season tomorrow night against the Vancouver Giants at 5:05 p.m. at the ShoWare Center.

T-Birds single game tickets for the 2009-10 season are available online at the T-Birds website and at the ShoWare Center box office. The ShoWare Center Box Office is open Monday through Friday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday game days at 10 a.m. and Sunday game days at noon.
