Blades See Regular Season End on Sour Note

The Saskatoon Blades gave up six straight goals on way to an 8-3 loss to the Prince Albert Raiders to close out the 2009/10 regular season on Saturday night.

Darren Dietz (Medicine Hat, AB), Marek Viedensky (Handlova, Slovakia), and Travis Toomey (Leduc, AB) scored for the Blades, who begin the playoffs next Saturday night at home.

Saskatoon - 1st - Dietz (Derek Hulak, Sena Acolatse) 3:54 pp The Blades made it 1-0 on the first career WHL goal for the 16-year-old Dietz. Hulak (Saskatoon, SK) found him cruising through the right wing circle and made a back a door pass. Dietz took the pass and found the top corner high over goaltender Garrett Zemlak.

Prince Albert - 1st - Igor Revenko (Ryan Button) 12:05 Revenko tied things up with his 26th marker this season. The Raiders forced a turnover from a Blades' defenseman and Revenko cut to the middle and beat goaltender Adam Morrison through the five hole.

Saskatoon - 1st - Viedensky (Hulak) 15:45 sh The road squad went back in front 2-1 on a shorthanded marker from Viedensky. Hulak carried down the left side and dropped for the trailing 19-year-old in front for his 20th of the season and 16th as a Blade.

Saskatoon - 1st - Toomey 16:14 sh Toomey potted another shorthanded goal on the same penalty just 34 seconds later to make it 3-1. The third-year Blade grabbed a loose puck in the Raiders' end, moved in all alone, and beat Zemlak with a backhand deke for his 11th on the campaign.

Prince Albert - 2nd - Brandon Herrod (Craig McCallum) 8:13 sh The Raiders made it a one-goal game once again on Herrod's 37th of the year. Morrison came well out of his net to play the puck of the zone but was unsuccessful. The Raiders then worked the puck to Herrod along the left boards, who fired one past a covering Stefan Elliott (North Vancouver, BC) in the crease.

Prince Albert - 2nd - Dustin Cameron (Ryan Harrison) 17:11 Cameron tied things up at three with his 30th of the season. The Raiders captain moved to the slot and wired one off the post and in past Morrison.

Prince Albert - 2nd - Revenko (Button, Tyler Yaworski) 17:35 Revenko gave the Raiders a 4-3 lead only 24 seconds later with his second of the night. The 19-year-old Belarusian, just like his first goal, grabbed a turnover in the Blades end and sent it to the back of the net for his 27th this year.

Prince Albert - 3rd - McCallum (Jordan Rowley, Nathan Deck) 1:04 pp The Raiders took a two-goal advantage early in the final frame on the McCallum's 26th. The overage forward took a shot and stayed with the rebound, putting it past Morrison.

Prince Albert - 3rd - McCallum (Herrod) 8:55 McCallum made it 6-3 for the Raiders with his second straight goal and 27th of the season. Herrod blocked a shot in his own end, moved into the Blades zone with McCallum, and had his saucer pass redirected home by his linemate.

Prince Albert - 3rd - Jonathan Parker (Cameron, Brendon Wall) 11:05 Parker gave the Raiders a 7-3 lead with less than nine minutes left on the clock in the third. Following a mad scramble in front of the Blades' net, Parker located a loose puck and put it in for his 15th goal of the year.

Prince Albert - 3rd - Mark McNeill (Harrison, Button) 18:55 The Raiders closed out the scoring with the McNeill's 9th on the campaign. Harrison circled around from behind the net and sent a cross-crease pass to McNeill, who one-timed it past Morrison.

In between the pipes, Morrison stopped 32 shots in the Blades goal to take the loss to end off the season. Zemlak turned aside 26 shots in the Raiders net in the final game of his major junior hockey career.

Final score Prince Albert Raiders 8, Saskatoon Blades 3.

The Blades finish off their 2009/10 regular season with a 46-19-3-4 record for 99 points, giving them third place in the Eastern Conference standings. The Raiders finish the season at 32-35-3-2 for 69 points and will end up in the ninth spot in the Eastern Conference standings.

The Western Hockey League has announced the Saskatoon Blades will take on the Red Deer Rebels in the Husky WHL Eastern Conference Quarter-Final. The Blades will open the series at home on Saturday March 20th and Sunday March 21st with puck drop slated for 7:05pm.
