Portland Winterhawks News Release
The Portland Winterhawks (4-1-0-1) earned a hard-fought road win over the previously unbeaten Everett Silvertips (4-1-0-0) Wednesday night, scoring five of the game's final six goals.
With the win, Portland pulled into a tie for first place in the U.S. Division with the Tri-City Americans.
Everett opened the scoring 11:11 into the game when Josh Winquist beat Portland netminder Keith Hamilton for his first goal of the season. The Silvertips then scored again with just one second to go in the first period when Brennan Yadlowski beat the clock to give Everett a 2-0 lead going into the second period.
The second period opened with the Winterhawks scoring 1:21 into the frame when Oliver Gabriel scored his first of the season with assists to Brad Ross and Brett Ponich.
Portland evened the game later in the period, when Troy Rutkowski beat Everett goaltender Kent Simpson on a power play for his second goal of the season to make it 2-2. The Silvertips got that one back before the end of the period when Tyler Maxwell scored a power play goal at the 17:31 mark to make it 3-2 through the end of two periods, but Portland would take over from there.
The Winterhawks again tied the game 8:44 into the third period when Ryan Johansen fired a slap shot that went right through the net, necessitating a video review. The review upheld the goal, giving Johansen his first of the season.
After scoring the tying goal Johansen helped set up the go-ahead goal at the 12:36 mark, as he got the puck coming out of the penalty box and passed it to Taylor Peters, who fed Spencer Bennett for Bennett's fourth goal of the season, as well as Portland's fourth goal of the night to make it 4-3 in favor of the Winterhawks.
Johansen struck again late in the third period when he fed Brad Ross, who put it in to give Portland a 5-3 win. For Ross, it was his sixth goal of the season and extended his goal scoring streak to five games, with at least one goal in each game he's played since returning from the Toronto Maple Leafs' training camp.
Johansen finished the night with one goal and two assists for three points, all in the third period. Oliver Gabriel also had a goal and two assists, while Brett Ponich had two assists and a +4 rating.
Hamilton picked up his fourth win in net for Portland this season, making 32 saves on 35 Everett shots. Simpson took the loss for the Silvertips, stopping 21 of Portland's 26 shots.
The Winterhawks were 1-2 on the power play, while going 8-9 on the penalty kill.
The team travels to Spokane for games Friday and Saturday against the Chiefs in a rematch of last year's first round playoff series.
