Portland Winterhawks News Release

Portland, Ore. - The Portland Winterhawks, proud member club of the Western Hockey League, shared today that alumnus Tyler Wotherspoon has signed a two-year, two-way contract with the New Jersey Devils.

De Leo, 29, is entering his 10th professional season and second as a member of the Devils' organization. Last year, the Surrey, B.C. native logged three goals and 21 points in 53 games for the Utica Comets, American Hockey League affiliate of the Devils.

Originally selected in the second round, #57 overall, of the 2011 NHL Draft by the Calgary Flames, Wotherspoon appeared in 30 games from 2013-17 where he notched five assists for Calgary. Additionally, Wotherspoon appeared in 285 games for the Flames' affiliate(s) in that span, starring for the Abbotsford Heat (2013-14), Adirondack Flames (2014-15) and Stockton Heat (2015-18). From there, he found his way to the San Antonio Rampage in 2018-19 and the Lehigh Valley Phantoms from 2019-21 before settling in Utica.

Prior to turning pro, Wotherspoon spent parts of five seasons in the Rose City, amassing 17 goals and 65 assists for 82 points in 239 games. After a four-game stint with the Winterhawks in 2008-09, Wotherspoon helped guide Portland to the postseason in each of his four full seasons, culminating in the club's 2013 WHL Championship victory over the Edmonton Oil Kings (left). Wotherspoon wore an "A" as one of the Winterhawks' alternate captains that season and recorded a goal and an assist in six games with Canada at the 2013 IIHF World Junior Championships.

Most recently, Wotherspoon also played for Canada at the 2022 Winter Olympic Games in Beijing, China, where he posted two assists in five games during his first international action since his final year of junior hockey.
