Portland Winterhawks News Release
Portland, Ore. - The Portland Winterhawks, proud member club of the Western Hockey League, shared today that Winterhawks alumnus Seth Jones was named one of three provisional players to be included on Team USA's men's hockey Olympic national team roster.
Jones joins Chicago Blackhawks teammate Patrick Kane and Toronto Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews as the first players chosen to play for Team USA in advance of the 2022 Winter Olympic Games in Beijing.
"It's no secret we're excited about the prospects of our team for the 2022 Games," Stan Bowman, General Manager of the U.S. Olympic men's hockey team, said in a statement. "Patrick, Auston and Seth reflect the high level of talent that will make up our final roster as we strive to bring gold back home to the U.S."
After representing the U.S. five times at almost every other level through his hockey career, Jones is set to make his Olympic debut in Beijing. The defenseman from Arlington, Texas was once considered for the 2014 Olympic team as a breakout rookie, the last time NHL skaters were allowed to play in the Olympics, but he was unable to crack the roster riddled with veterans on the defensive side.
Now, eight years later, his spot is secured. The final 25-player team rosters for the Olympic Games will be unveiled in January 2022.
The former Portland Winterhawk has consistently been one of the top American skaters dating back to his time in the Rose City. Jones, former captain of the U.S. Under-17 and Under-18 teams, has enjoyed international success winning three gold medals and one bronze medal during his junior days. The 2013 Western Hockey League Rookie of the Year helped lead Portland to its third WHL Championship, producing 15 points in 21 playoff games.
Jones was originally selected by the Nashville Predators with the 4th overall pick in the 2013 NHL Draft and has laced up for 580 NHL regular season games.
